Canadian national passenger train

Lookin' good, Glen. :thumb::thumb: The flat spray between the lettering applications is about the only way to do multi-part heralds using dry transfers. My first batch of custom lettering from C-D-S included black backgrounds for the large heralds on reefers - luckily, I already knew about clear-coating between applications.

On wooden cars, CN put the wafer heralds on sheet metal panels, then screwed them to the carside.

While burnishing dry transfers is the best way to get them to adhere to the car and look like they're painted on, it's sometimes useful to know that decal setting solution will also work, especially in those hard-to-reach places, like between "boards" on wooden cars. Simply slit the lettering along the board lines with a sharp blade, then apply the setting solution as you would for a decal.

Again, excellent work -- you're really inspiring me! The layout/background looks good too.

Here are my two Santa Fe coaches -- would this kind of coaches have been used by CN? that is, would it be historically accurate to repaint these as CN coaches?

Thanks!
Rob

Thanks Wayne and Rob. I had a few tense moments last night when I sprayed the reefer with the flat spray. The first coat turned the entire side of the car white!. Luckily I had this happen before and a second coat turned the it back to clear. Not really sure why this happens though. What kind of decal setting solution do you use with the CDS decals? I've used solvaset on accu-cals but it's pretty strong stuff.

Rob, the Shorter of the two looks like an Athearn and the longer looks like a con-cor or riverossi. The Athearn car isn't a coach, I'm not sure what it is, maybe a dinner of sleeper, the second is a coach and I'd figure it's close enough to a CN coach that I'd paint it that way. In fact I'd paint both of them in CN but I'm not that big of a rivet counter either.

Glen, you are an excellent instructor. Your photo coverage was very good. I added Krylon to my list of things to buy, but took it off after reading about your scare with the express reefer!

Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot.

I have had a simular experience with tstors dulcote, but a second spray truned the white 'frosting' clear again, just like the Krylon clear. I wouldn't be surprised if the two products are the same, if not in manufacturer but at least in chemical makeup.

Glen, I use the Solvaset, when required, on dry transfers. Microset and Microsol don't seem to be strong enough.
Rob, I think that both of those cars are Athearns - the one with the irregular windows is a diner, while the other is a coach. The CNR had a roster of almost 15,000 passenger cars, and while it's unlikely that any were exact matches for the Athearn cars (which are abbreviated to allow operation on smaller radii), this is where you use your modeller's licence. I doubt that those cars are dead-on for Santa Fe, either.;):-D:-D

Thanks, Glen and Wayne. Yes, the first car is a dining car and I think at least one is an Athearn. I know I made one from an old kit. So it sounds "OK" to proceed with painting them in CN colours? This should make for an interesting project in the near future. Thanks, Rob

I finished the train, with a few exceptions that I'll add later:

FA-1.jpg

P2K FA-1. Okay, so it's not a real passenger engine but I do have a 4-8-2 steamer that I'll be working on to replace it.

JunecoReefer.jpg

the finished juneco express Reefer. I added the trucks, couplers and door hardware today.

RPOfinished.jpg

Mail and express. I messed up on this and the diner car. the wafer is tilted in the wrong direction (DOH!) I don't think I'll change to though since both cars match and they won't be leaving my home layout.

There are a few more things to add. I have been toying with the idea of adding limited interiors to the cars. I also have to add diaphrams when I track some down.
I do have a lighted drumhead for the end on the observation car, I might also repaint the railings on the observation car, I'm not too happy with the CNR yellow. I think the real ones had brass.
Finaaly I also have a through baggage boxcar on the workbench, waiting for decals.
