Hi train guys
I'm kooklik from Card Model forum. Thank you for visiting BigBoy thread. I have never collected train models. I saw some train models sold in Thailand but all most were so expensive (by too high tax). So I want to build my own model. Big Boy is one of my impressive train. I still no experience in train designing or scale model trains. Please feel free to visit and give some comments to my thread.

Hi Kooklik. I visit the card modeler's often and have seen some of your designs. If the bigboy is as good as your other designs, we are in for a real treat. Thank you.

Hi Loren
Big Boy is very tough project. It takes long time to be completed. I have alot of drawings but less photos. Do you know any link about Big Boy erection or refit websites?

kooklik, welcome to our corner of the forum!

steamlocomotives.info
and
steamlocomotives.com

are good resources for information, although there are probably better sites for such a well known locomotive.

It is a shame the taxes make model railroading cost prohibitive in Thailand :-( I've known a few people from Thailand at my university here in the US.

The sufficiant cuz by taxes makes me to create a model train by myself. Thank you very much for the links you gave.

Question about Bigboy

Does any one know about sand box ? I saw some Big Boy's drawings of sand box. What is sand used for ? Adding friction between rail and wheels?

Yep - you guessed it right :D They shoot steam into the sand box and it blows sand down a tube which ends just in front of the drive wheels...

I always sugest a demonstration... Take a piece of sandpaper and put your hand on the rough side... Then place the smooth side on your workbench and pressing down very lightly - slide it around a bit... The sandpaper stays with your hand....

Now turn it over and repeat - very lightly.... the paper stays with the bench and your hand moves..... putting the grit in front of the wheels makes the smooth steel rails "gritty"

The sand stays with the rails and the wheels get a lot more traction, allowing for more pulling power.

Need some help

Hi to all
Here is the latest Bigboy design progression. Now I'm putting equipments in front of smoke box. I don't know the name of equipments those are between head light and number plate. They looks like radiator and pumps at both side. I have thousands of drawing but it takes time to find out by openning. If anyone knows their names..
Best Regards

Thanks for your kind words. I'm new for train model. I just saw Bigboy in a documentary program (discovery channel or something). I knew this loco is the largest succeeded steam loco. I impressed how those people built them during in those days. Historic and beautiful machine which I intend to create one my own. Hope you enjoy together with my building.
Cheers
