I have a new layout and my locos wheels seem to be slipping a good bit. I have two Atlas gold diesels, one is 6 axel, the other is 4. I also have a 4 axle proto2000 diesel. They all slip pretty good. I don't want to replace the wheels. I would add weight, depending on where i can put it. Is there anything in the tank that is under the engine, or is it hollow? I don't know much about engines, as far as that goes. Any other treatment I could put on wheels that would increase traction without alot of conductivity loss? Thanks.

What are the circumstances under which the wheels are slipping? Hard acceleration? Heavy load? Grade? After the track was oiled?
Please provide a bit more info, as the solution may depend on what the cause of the problem is.

Part of the problem is too steep a grade, but I am going to revise that. It was also happening under a moderate speed on the flat parts, pulling about 9 walthers gold line coal hoppers, which are the correct weight. I have not oiled my track as of yet, but I have in the past on another layout.
It sounds as if a bit more weight might help, but you need to be careful about adding so much that the drivers cannot slip. This would be bad, as it may cause the motor and/or decoder to "let the smoke out"...!

What radius are your curves? I doubt you could add that much more weight to these locos and make much of a difference. Wheels slip around sharp curves and steep grades - and unless you change the track configuration, there aint much you can do about it.

When I built my layout, I had to doublehead some trains on my grade. Over the year, something has happened and I can pull longer trains with a single loco. It may be wear on the tracks or wheels.
