An idle thought as I'm sitting here in the house, 100' away from my train room, the temperature outside is 14 degrees, and tomorrow it's supposed to snow/sleet/freeze:

Where's your layout?

It seem like the most popular spots are
Basement
Attic
Garage
Spare room
Detached building
Elsewhere
No layout

Mine is in a detached building (a 3 car garage that the former owner used as an auto restoration shop) which is great because it's insulated and has complete HVAC and a 1/2 bath. Great except when tomorrow's weather forecast is for 10 degrees and nasty.

I started out with a 4x8 stuck in the corner of an unfinished basement. Now that its finished I have a room about 12x8 to start building my layout

Mine is in the basement. It shares the basement with my other hobby, woodworking. So I have been tryin to fix it up and am currenty putting up a ceiling, and if you check my profile, its true, im only 16, (patting myself on the back), but I love working on trains and making the "trainroom" better.

Now a seperate building would be nice. riverrotter, If I were you I would put up a bed, mini fridge, and microwave, you wouldnt have to worry about leaving in the cold.

Mine is in the basement. If I had it my way it would be in the living room. If I really had it my way it would take up the entire house. he he he

Mine takes up 9'x7' along a 2'4" deep L shape in the room of our house we use the least... the dining room. That may change soon though as my wife is hoping to move her office out of the home and into bona fide office space. If that happens, I get her old office space.

I picked elsewhere, Currently it is in my mind waiting for the day when the basement is cleaned up from all of the kids toys so that I can start to take over. I just keep running my trains in my head or when I get the chance, set up a quick oval on the ping-pong table and run them around. (so sad).

I started 18mos ago in the garage...way too hot in the summer and way too cold in the winter, so I took over the spare bedroom/office/indoor garage, cleaned it out just enough for a 9x5 L-shaped layout. Much more comfortable now....just bidin' time until I get that caboose in the backyard!!! sign1

The pictures are excellent - can we see more, folks?

TrainNut: I like how you've integrated the layout into the room. The benchwork looks like furniture! I'd enjoy seeing more pix, from closer.

Roger Hensley: A very tantalizing picture. Could we see more of what you've done? It looks like you've done a good job of 'sharing' the rest of the basement with your model railroad ;-)

scubadude: Another excellent job of creating a layout in a shared space. I'd really like to see closer shots, and progress pictures as you continue here.

So far the basement seems to be the most popular location, while my location - detached building - seems to be least favorite. I know there are a lot of folks who don't have basements, and people who have basements or garages who prefer not to use them for temperature/humidity reasons.

scubadude: If you find 2 cabooses, please tell me about one of them! Either that or a nice passenger car (vista dome would be optimal!).

Mine is in the garage for now. We are talking about moving again in a couple years and would like to find a place with a full basement. When that happens....:thumb::mrgreen::thumb::mrgreen::thumb:

If you liked that one, how about the one that is sitting in my living room?

Or how about the one that used to sit in our den?

There are more picture for each of those and some others I did not share that have links in my signature.

Out AZ way
When our house was being built I had the builder move a few doorways around so that I could access the third bedroom from my den. That is my train room. I have a hard time believing that it's been almost four years, and I'm still only about halfway done.... Well, I guess I'd be further along if I hadn't torn up half my tracks three ddifferent times...

My layout occupies an 8'x15' space on our 3rd floor/loft/attic. The other half is off limits...even though the wife doesn't really use it. Just to be on the safe side, I set up switches for a wye so that I could add a yard over there. (my layout is just an oval...to watch my On3 cars roll...with plans for scenery and taking to shows).

"My" HO layout is a club layout at one of our local museums. The On30 layout is a module which is currently under construction. Scenery portion is on the dining room table and the support structure is disassembled and in a spare bedroom.

I started with a 13x17 block poney barn that thr previous owner built. My Wife uit for storeing stuff (junk)at first. I told one day I was going to clen it out and use it for MRR. she didn't take me serious. Then one day I backed my truck up to it and started to empty it. She saw me and came running. She wanted to make sure I wasn't dicarding any thing of value(as if there was anything of value). Guess what. A after about an hour of inspecting my pay load and one black snake she said it could all go. So I made a few trips to the dump an I had a place for MRR no floor a 8 foot slideing door and no elctric or heat. I added 12 by 14 addition. which is another story of its own. ran electric to it 350 feet from house. for first 2 years I ran off of several 100ft extention cords now have electric for real. If you look real close you can see extention cord'

It was 17 degrees last night when I was out there and it is 30 now, Guess where I am headed now?

well so much for going out to train barn. It is a mix of snow & sleet here. I am afraid to try it because left leg still not acting the way it should from the stroke so I guess I will take a nap by the wood stove.
