Did I ever mention...

...my wife's father was a GE Field Engineer and his assignment was riding UP turbines, testing and tinkering, smashing knuckles and getting chuckles? He was thrilled to find out his son-in-law is a train buff (not to mention a good listener). He was so proud to show me a photo- they still travel the Airstream style- his photo of the UP turbine at an outdoor museum that he took a couple years ago (#26?). He was upset because the museum was closed- it, his baby, was behind a fence and he couldn't go UP to it and reminisce in closer quarters...then he began talking.

yUP.

Hey, Deano, I was down at the LHS today and saw a U.P. locomotive that you might like: a C-855, A- and B-units, by Overland. If you can find another A-unit, you could have HO scale versions of U.P.'s entire roster of these locos. They also had a big U.P. Mountain, also by OMI, although I don't recall which class. Sorry, no photos, but I thought of you as soon as I saw them. ;):-D:-D

Josh, THANKS!
actually, the fact that that FM H20-44 was a SWPC was the least of why i liked it:eeki::119: .
the fact that:
1- it was an FM demonstrator #2000
2- it was originally a UP:thumb:
3- its one of only a couple H20-44's left
was the real reasons i put this engine in the spotlight:winki::mrgreen: . HOWEVER, THANKS for letting us know what SWPC is using now:thumb::mrgreen: .

Zachary, hey man, NO NEED for apologies:thumb: , your more then welcome to pop in whenever you can!:winki::mrgreen: i hope you get your computer fixed/replaced soon:thumb: .

Mark, the story on your father in law is just slap TO COOL!!!:thumb: man your lucky:winki: , i would be asking him 1000 questions, and be on the edge of my seat the whole time:mrgreen: . take advantage of all his stories while you still can:thumb: .

Wayne, i am VERY FAMILIAR with Alco's C-855's:thumb::mrgreen: i have read a lot about them, and have TONS of pics of them:mrgreen: . they were very impressive looking, but sadly they were junk:eeki::frowns: . one UP worker stated that they looked like they were quickly cobbled together, not at all Alco quality:eeki: , i must say, if you look real close at some of the shots i have of them, i would agree with the guy:eeki: . Still, they were MASSIVE and quite AWESOME to look at:thumb: . i have seen the Overland models of them, they did an OUTSTANDING JOB on them:thumb: , sadly, they cost so much I'll never have one:cry::frowns: . i bet the price was well over $1200.00 EACH:eeki::winki: .

UP's mountains are cool!:thumb: i have seen a few plastic versions at the shows recently, but as far as UP steam goes, a Y3 and 2-10-2 are at the top of my list right now:winki::mrgreen: . i think next weekend is the BIG Madison show:mrgreen: , I'll have my eyes peeled for those two:thumb: .(i am ALSO looking for a Rivarossi cab forward too:eeki::mrgreen: ).

Dean, unless I missed a price tag, it was $1,000.00 for the pair.

WOW WAYNE!!!:eeki: thats a steal for those units!!!:thumb::mrgreen: , sadly, i couldn't afford to get both:cry: , but THE A UNIT IS DOABLE!!:twisted::mrgreen:
(looks at the clock...)Wayne, I'll be at your front door in the early hours of Monday morning:eeki::winki::119: , how far to the LHS? ...:119:

Gus, THANK YOU!, GLAD you liked the write up:mrgreen: . you are right, going from the pics i have of #1366, it WAS an AWESOME engine in its day:thumb: , but it was an FM, how could it not have been:winki::mrgreen: .

****************************************************
Well, i don't have a model of an H20-44:cry: , but how about a UP H15-44:thumb: .
The second pic is one for Zachary:winki: , i was going to post some of my bigger newer engines for him per his request in a previous post, but i haven't got around to weathering them yet:eek:ops: .

It depends: Bring along a roll of toilet paper, and I can get you there in 10 minutes. :p:-D:-D:twisted:
If you're interested in those units, I can check on that price - there's a note on them attesting to their smooth-running capabilities, and they'll test run the units for anyone who asks. They also do lay-away. ;):-D:-D

Wayne

By the way, I'm starting to develop an appreciation for FM units, due mainly to the pictures that you're posting. Keep 'em comin'. :thumb:

It's funny how UP has become a front runner in my layout
planning.:mrgreen: I have seen more interesting stuff on this

Wayne, i was so glad to read that:thumb::mrgreen: . you might enjoy my third installment of "Deano's Spotlight" series:winki::mrgreen: , ALSO, i hate to let the cat out of the bag:eeki: , but as soon as spring comes, you might also enjoy the "virtual" field trip i am going to take us on:thumb: .

Unfortunately though Wayne, it will use just about all the FM proto pics i have to do those projects, so I'm kinda hesitant to post many more of the FM shots i have taken till i do those posts:eek:ops: , but for YOU, I'll see what i can do:winki::mrgreen: .

Joe, if i had ANYTHING to do with UP becoming the front runner on your layout, then i am HONORED:winki::mrgreen: , if not:eek:ops: , THATS STILL GREAT!:thumb::mrgreen:

Hey Joe, the last part of your post just made my day:winki: , THANK YOU!
thats one of the things i am striving for doing this thread:thumb: .

a very good friend of mine, Steve(Nazgul) wrote me and said something to the effect he liked this thread because its as if you folks were sitting in my train room, and we were all talking/sharing train info, and perhaps learning some stuff:thumb: . thats EXACTLY how i am trying to do this, but it takes guys like YOU, Joe, to say weather i am "on track":)119: ) in doing this. THANK YOU, Joe, for letting me know I'm "on track":thumb::smilie: . (and of coarse THANK YOU Steve:winki::mrgreen: )

Triplex, THANK YOU for posting the link to that AWESOME shot of SWPC's SDP35:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Zachary, THANKS! i wish you luck on getting your computer fixed:thumb: , be sure and thank your buddy for letting you use his to get you by:winki::smilie: .

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...
Though we have been having a horrible winter up here, i felt compelled to railfan a little today:winki: . I'm not one to drive in this stuff much, so instead of going to UP's or WSOR's yards in Janesville, i decided to stay in my back yard, and just railfan here before i stopped over to dads today:mrgreen: .

IC&E and UP run through here, so i first stopped down to the WEST YARD in S. Beloit , this was owned by the Milwaukee road but ICE has it now. i was lucky enough to get a couple shots of two of ICE's geeps, "the city of S.Beloit" and "the city of Janesville", it was high noon when i took these pics, but it was so overcast the shots arnt great:eek:ops: , there was two buildings i had to contend with too, sorry, like i said, not great shots:eek:ops: .

i had a big surprise there though:eeki: , remember the GP30 i took pics of at WSOR's round house in Janesville, well low and behold THERE IT WAS hooked up to the ICE geeps in South Beloit:eeki::thumb: . like i mentioned before, the GP30 is my FAVORITE of all the geeps, so i took a few more shots of it.:thumb:

After taking about 150 shots of the ICE geeps & the GP30, i decided to head over to the old CNW line UP runs on, its less then 2 miles from ICE so it just took a couple mins to get there:winki: . theres an industrial area that usually has a couple UP engines on the siding, and about three tracks full of hoppers, not today though:frowns: , no engines was there, but it was just after 12:00, they were probably out working, HOWEVER there was a couple strings of hoppers, so i took a few shots of the better looking ones:thumb: .

trudging back to the car through about 2' of snow at times:madd: , i happened to look over at the RR crossing transformer, i had seen UP painted over the CNW markings, but oddly, the UP markings were faded so bad, it looked as if the CNW painted over the UP:eeki: , i thought this was kinda neat, so i took a pic to share with you folks:winki::mrgreen: .

Well, that my friends sums up todays railfanning for me:winki: . if you have read this post, all the pics below are self explanatory:119: .

till next time...STAY ON TRACK!:winki:

THANK YOU for the complement Sarge:mrgreen: . i know you don't want to let out the details on your freelanced road, but could you at least tell us the era/time frame its based in?

NOTE TO Wayne:
Wayne, while i was glad to read you have found interest in FM's:mrgreen: , i was kinda down because the very first FM rolled out of the Beloit plant in 8/44 , which puts them out of the era your layout is based on:frowns: .

*****************************************************
Though my layout is based on 1969-79 , at times real modern engines just seem to pop up on it:eek:ops: ...and i am beginning to think Big Ed is somehow related to Dick Clark or Bob Barker:eeki: , he appears unchanged in photos from the steam era till today:confused: ...unsolved mysteries on the Rock Valley Sub:toug::119: . Heres all the "modern" GE units i have.

For a minute, this locomotive wasn't registering with me. I thought, "It's a GP40-2, so why was my first impression 'GP60'?" Then I realized what was "wrong": it's a Phase 3 GP40-2 with angled blower duct. I'm still not really used to this uncommon version. Judging by the light bracket, ex-SP.

Triplex, GOOD EYE!:thumb:
ICE #4207 was built 10/84 and was in fact an SP, #7246:winki:
ICE #4208 was also built 10/84 and was an SP, #7251:winki:

i too was unsure as to what exactly these engine were:confused: , GP40-2 was the first thing that came to my mind, but i couldn't place what wasn't right:eek:ops: .

*******************************************************
EDIT: UPDATE ON THE GP30...
After looking up the ICE units, i had the urge to find out some info on the GP30 i have taken shots of:winki: , heres what i found:
that engine was built on 4/63 and was sold to the SOO, its number on the SOO was #711 . WC ended up with this engine, and kept it as #711, THEN, it was sold to MJRX leasing, and as you can see they have it #711. this whole engines life has been #711, pretty cool huh:thumb: .

i also found out WSOR leased that engine because they had 2 SD40-2's in the shop for repairs, unfortunately while using the GP30 #711 it had encountered mechanical problems and was being sent back to Kansas City for repairs(this is why i seen it hooked up to the ICE units:winki: ). i guess its all just a matter of being in the right place at the right time:winki::mrgreen: .

I never would have caught that about the GP40-2, pretty cool:thumb:

Deano here are the GP30's I have been working on

100_0697.jpg

The other Q is late 80's early 90's, still trying to get some decent pics.

Here is a teaser for now, what do ya think?

Sarge, those GP30's look GREAT!!!:thumb:

your SD40-2 looks AWESOME!:thumb: , NICE freelanced road name & scheme:thumb::mrgreen: . just my thoughts, a little weathering on those freelanced units would really enhance the details on 'em:winki: , not much weathering, just enough to make them look slightly used, NOT rust buckets:winki: .

the time frame you picked would enable you to get away with a lot, considering UP took over the Rio Grande in 1989, you could run patched and unpatched units. you could like you mentioned, have your freelanced road interchange with UP AND Rio Grande, or just the UP.

i am really looking forward to seeing your plans come alive:thumb::mrgreen: .

Uuummm, Rio Grande Ind. bought SP in 1988 and took the SP name, then merged with UP in 1996. The history will be that the RG&S bought the Tennesse Pass/Royal Gorge line from the Grand in 87. This way I can interchange with most of my favorite roads (prototypicaly even) in Pueblo. D&RGW, SP, UP and even AT&SF:mrgreen: Also this way I can run exotic home shop built units such as GP35R-2's and a SD9/18R that are on the way.
