Free Model #3 HMS Dreadnought 1:400

Hello

This is my build thread for Free Model Competition #3. Since last free model
competition I started some models but didn't have enough time to work with
them. Now I hope that, thanks to the contest I will have the motivation
to finish the ship.

I decided to build the HMS Dreadnought available as a free download from
DigitalNavy. The only
difference is that I will resize it to 1:400 scale (the digitalnavy is 1:700).

There was a build thread of rescaled HMS Dreadnought on this forum:
Bill Jones : Digital Navy 1:250 Dreadnought (1906)-Build. There is a lot of stuff there that I will
use. First there is a download link of 1:250 turrets prepared by Roman
(from DigitalNavy). There is also an information that we can use V108
(other free DigitalNavy kit) guns as small guns for Dreadnought. There
are also links to plans and pictures of the ship. This is important because
I'm planning to build a full hull version of the ship. The DigitalNavy model
is only a waterline so I will have to prepare the underwater part and provide
it to everyone as a free download.

There is a lot of other information in internet that can be used. There is
a great site The Dradnought Project. You can find there a 3D model of the ship. There is a
Steel Navy 1:350 HMS Dreadnought by Steven Backer gallery. This one is not a card model
but I like it very much. The scale is very simillar and there is a lot of useful
information.

I always wanted to build that ship. If you read about battleships you
always see pre-dreadnoughts, dreadnoughts and this is The HMS Dreadnought.
You can find more about the ship in wikipedia.

I will not start the build from the hull because I have to prepare one.
There is a risk that I will not be able to do this and then I will build
the waterline version. At the first place I will start building the turrets and small guns.

Hello

I started building main turret. This is not a final version. I want to check,
how detailed can it be in 1:400 scale.

It is not painted and some things are still missing. The guns are
only for picture, the final ones will be much better.
There will be a ladder on the front and railings on the small guns platform.
The turret base is made from few coins (only for picture).

The only thing that I was not able to do are the footstrips which are
to small for me to made (1mm x 0.1mm).

It already looks good even you said it is only test build. I have the model also and it is nearly impossible for me to make thos small gun attach on main gun... The gun turret is "solid rod" or paper rolled part?

I will show how everything is done, when I will be doing the final version.

It was a lot of time since my last post.

I was making a ladder for the turret. I was trying different
materials. Here you can see a tool that I made for this.

Below the turret with the ladder. It is made from cotton and glued
with CA glue.

Below the link to 3D model of the turret.

http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/models/fittings/BVIII_Turret/

Here is another version of the ladder made from cotton but glued
using acrylic paint. It looks better but not good enough for me.
The thread is to thick for this.

The next version is made of 0.09mm fishing line glued with black
acrylic paint. The result is very good (for me) but the fishing line
is almost invisible and hard to work with.

I think that I will use the 0.1mm wire for my ladders. The cotton thread is
to thick and the fishing line is hard to work with (invisible).

I like the way you get the rungs evenly spaced. It looks good.

In my first post I told that I will be building the details first and the hull at
the end. But one day (it was few weeks ago) I decided that I need a stand
for all the small parts.

This is an original digitalnavy hull that I had build. I had a lot of fun with it
so I decided to start work with underwater part.

This is the test build to check if all parts fit well. When I will finish
I will start building the final one.

No. It's my design. When I will test that everything is OK. I will
publish it for download.

The hull is finished (but only in test version). Now I think it's time to start
building the real model because until now I have nothing done.

A real well done build. Good on you! and thanks for the pics. It helps me get additional references for my builds.

:thumb:real nice! and with a full hull waterline kits always strike me as half a ship its one of those ships that seems to overlooked in bigger scales i found fuse wire makes very good rails, ladders etc cotton tends to be "lumpy" and fishing line is hard to keep straight i pulled alot of wire off a busted transformer(the electrical type not the robot type:mrgreen:) which makes great rails

Hello

Today is the last day of the contest. I'm very sorry to say it but I was not
able to finish the model for the contest. I had less free time then expected
and there was much more work the I planned. As you know I planned
to modify the digital navy free kit in bigger scale (1:400 vs original 1:700).
But the "modifications" are quite big. In fact only the shape of the main
deck was left from the original DN.

I will be continuing this build and I hope that in few months I will
finish the 1:400 kit and the model.

I'll be following this thread too. I prefer the complete hull models and I respect the amount of work that you've put into getting that part developed. I'm sure that we are all aware that you probably would have completed this model with time to spare had you not dedicated some time to creating an accurate lower hull.

The model looks good, keep at it please.
