I'm having a pretty crap day as far as trains go. I'd been excited that my sound equipped SD45-2 had arrived, and it looked and sounded great. Sadly, the thing can't run. It will start at some throttle settings but not at others (yes, i remember that on DCC you have to activate the locomotive). even when you do get it running, its going a bit to fast to switch trains or couple with cars. most of the time it won't move until the DCC throttle itself is over 50%, and then it shoots off. Its just a waste of my money. Its probably a good locomotive, but the decoder is trash.

Here are some pictures anyways!

Gotta love those genesis fans. Atleast its an attractive paperweight.

I also joined the local model railroad club. Its pretty fun, and i managed to get a few pictures of some of my equipment running on the layout. they had basically cleared the mainline to allow me to figure out where everything is, and where everything goes, since their layout is big, and i've only first saw it this past sunday.

Gotta love that nose marker light! Its still putting me lightyears ahead of every other U34CH model i've seen. the SEPTA cars are another member's, while the cab car is mine.

Here is their whole terminal, with my U34CH on the extreme right.

keep increasing the start voltage until it starts at throttle position 1 I think this is in increments of 0 to 255. I had one that had to go to 70 before it started smooth.
Charlie

unfortuneately, they have MRC decoders, which just go from 0 to 32. Even then, i was playing with the start voltage and it seems like it doesn't matter, because what ever works at one time doesn't work the next time i put the train on the tracks.

It NEVER runs one throttle position 1 on any speed step setting. it might move on 2 if the starting voltage valueis high, but they still run insanly fast when starting. I have to get closer to around 6-8, and even though its as if the locomotive is struggling, it still moves way to fast. then it hits a curb, and won't run unless i put the throttle all the way up, in which case it will again shoot like a rocket.

What was MRC thinking?

If this is an Athearn Locomotive they will make it right. Just send them an email. Might want to read this thread too.

Hope this helps. I know it is a disappointment when the new stuff doesn't work right, but when you think about how many things that can go wrong that don't we are still in good shape in the hobby.
Charlie

thanks for your help. I'll try emailing Athaern, i've already emailed MRC.

Needs a little help ...

4876 is the same GG1 that ended up in the union station's basement. IT BETTER GET HELP!announce1sign1

Thats the Burlington County Model Railroad Club. The U34CH was my first super detail project, although it isn't totally finished, lol. There is so much more to that club's layout. I'm really going to have to take more pictures.

We went down to Castle Rock and caught the Royal Unicorn, the B&O’s through passenger train on the RK&M. Today it had a lot of express business and a C&O through car for Washington.
