USS Tarawa LHA1 1/200

B

Bionic Modeler

I hope you have a place to put it when you are done. From th elooks of your office it is like mine. I don't have anywhere to put small ones let alone a monster like that.

It'll be interesting to see when it's done

I did two 6-month Western Pacific cruises aboard the USS Tarawa when I was in the Marine Corps. LHA's were much nicer ships than their predecessors, LPH's. The new class, LHD's, are nicer still but I didn't get the opportunity to sail aboard any of them.

I didn't serve on the Tarawa, but I did get on board her when she was going through some refit work in San Dog. Is she still in action?

Yes.......... she's still protecting Freedom and helping those in need!

Excellent! One of the ships I served on was decommissioned and sold to the Aussies, another was sent to the razor blade factory and I'm not sure but I think the third one is still on duty, though I can't confirm it.

Is this model available for DL? What's the approximate scale 1/700?

Thanks for the link on Tarawa

I am not even sure I can remember how to build her so it will be a long time before it is released if ever. As for scale it's 1/200th which gives a length of 50 inches overall.

CKTJ........... which ships?

My dad retired MCPO in 68. He served on the Plymouth Rock (LSD-29), Tarawa (CV-40), Saratoga (CVA-60) Enterprise (CVA(N)-65) and retired off the Shangri-La (CV-38.)

He was on the commissioning detail for the Enterprise.......... I was little but I remember watching her cruise around Newport News.

barry............ as much effort you have put into this............ I have no boubt you could start over and not miss a beat!

You've done a stellar job so far. If you ever release it drop me a line. Still, I'm going to keep an eye on this thread.:thumb:

I was stationed at a Sub Base and was temporarily assigned to the U.S.S Sperry, the last wooden decked Sub Tender in existence. I even towed her out into the bay so the Fleet Tugs could haul her out to sea. I've got a funny story about that event, having to do with GreenPeace. I was also stationed on the U.S.S. Sides FFG-14, she was a guided missle frigate, one of the Oliver Hazzard Perry class ships. I was TDY to the McKee for awhile, another Sub Tender, was stationed to the U.S.S. Shasta an AOE and was stationed on a Torpedo Retriever. We used to go out and collect the spent torpedoes after the big boys played war games. I was and engineer and a diver on that one. Loved it!

EDIT: I also drove LCM 6's, which is how I hauled out the Sperry. I was both Engineer and Assault Boat Coxswain for three separate LCM's Serving Port Services.

cat walk rails

Some poor pics of the catwalk rails got fed up of looking at a bare deck so I put a few choppers on it more to convince myself the end is in sight even if a long way off.

Thanks for the kind words

Coming along beautifully there barry, those choppers are a work of art all on their own.

I like the look of the hull too, wether that slight warping was intended or not, it looks very realistic compared to the shots of tarawa class ships I have seen through the course of this build. She really is going to be something to look at when it's done, keep up the awesome work!

Thanks for the flowers. I'm glad the chopers look realistic to folks who have actually been up close to them.

The hull will receive a couple of glue injections in a couple of places and the theory is that with some correctly bent run off pipes holding the plates the hull should look pretty realistic at the finish
