Yet Another Module

Hi guys,

Well Im in a bit of a snag here with my layouts and there progress. Im supposed to have already started my HO layout and be starting my N scale one too. But I have a situation. Work is killing me right now lol. But thats not the reason why. Some of you might member me mentioning my parents getting a divorce a little while back. Well its still unknown to me what is going on with them and I still live at home being 18 years old (yeah some of you are going why are you still at home, your 18 hahahaha). So with that said I talked to my dad about starting new things and he said that I would be better off waiting till they know for sure what is going on. So I agreed cuz I dont want to jump right in and start a new layout and then find out that I have to tear it all right back down again to move to a new house with my dad. So I will be doing some modules in the meantime to keep me busy.

I started to think about what I could do. I mean there is TONS of stuff but as I was coming home on the toll road with my dad I saw the Caterpillar Equipment Rental Facility by my house. Ive seen it EVERYDAY on my way home but I never thought of modeling it before. Thats exactly what my next module will be. I plan on making this a large but not to large module. Maybe something like 2' x 3' square. It wont have any trains on it, well maybe just a single track running along the back wall of the facility or along the front of the module next to the street, thats still undecided at this point. What I do know is I want a LARGE building with 4 or 5 service bays for the CAT equipment to be serviced and worked on when they need repairs or are brought back to the yard from a job site.

I plan on building this large CAT Rental Facility using the Nu-Line Strutures Moden Concrete Warehouse walls. Ill have a small 2 story section which will be an office and then the main part of the building will be 3-stories with 4 or 5 of the large cargo doors that Nu-Line makes as Service Bay Doors. I also want to detail the inside of the service bays maybe.

Along with the building will be a HUGE yard for Construction Equipment storage. Also have a small parking lot across the front of the building with a sidewalk and a 4 lane highway in front. The entire facility will be enclosed in Nu-Lines Concrete Retaining walls and the entrance to the yard and where the service bays are (service bays are in the back of the building) will be steel gates that Nu-Line also makes. I plan to have the whole module be the CAT Rental facility with a BIG yard.

heres some pics of some CAT rental stores I found on Google to give you an idea of what I am talking about:

here is a picture from google earth of the actual facility by my house:

Google Maps

this CAT Rental store just under went a huge remodel in which the old building was torn down and a new one was built right behind it (you can see the foundation for the new building behind the old one) It is now almost finished. There is also a cement plant if you go left and down a little bit (if you go down the street "wright" till it deadends; you'll see a big white building, drag down to the street "Town Center Dr." and all along the top of that street you will see the cement plant. Google Earth Rocks!!!

Im also going to have to get a ton of CAT equipment for the yard!!!! Thats where Norscot comes in tho hehehehe

I found a guy that does custom lowboy trailers for equipment hauling in HO scale. Here are some of them I will be getting from him for this dirama. Im going to have them all painted orange like the one in the second link below. I will have plenty of lowboy trucks to haul all that heavy equipment to and from various job sites

One thing to keep in mind is that the Cat rental center would not have a lowboy & tractor for every piece of equipment they rent. They would probably have 2 or 3 tractor/lowboy combos that would deliver the equipment to the job sight, and then return to the rental center to pick up another piece of Cat equipment to go to another job sight. I think most construction projects, the foreman is more concerned with not having the workers standing around than an extra day or two of rental expense, so the equipment would be delivered to the job sight a day before they were needed and picked up a day or so after the work was done.

Are those trucks r-t-r? Hobby Warehouse in Lakewood, Ca carries a lot of truck and trailer kits, and they can special order most anything that is available from local distributors. One of their customers is heavily into 1/87 scale truck modeling and has turned them on to that part of the hobby. I don't know for sure, but I think kit prices would be 25% to 50% less than the prices quoted on that Canadian web site.

TruckLover- Don't stress, I am 21 and I still stay with my parents- got to pay them rent though. Marriage date has been moved to early Jan, so if things are okay, I will then move out. I hope that your parents can resolve things, there is always hope, even if we don't see it. (Sorry if I'm getting too personal now).

By the way, can't wait to see what you manage to get done!

Josh, I was in to Hobby Warehouse today, and they have a bunch of lowboy trailers on sale for $4.99. The trailers don't look all that detailed or that great, but my buddy Eli behind the counter showed me a tractor/trailer combination that he kit bashed from one of the trailers and an Athearn tractor and it is every bit as nice as those Canadian high dollar models. I suspect that the models, details, paint, and decals that Eli used in the model including a Cat tractor load is probably less than $30.00.

hehehehehe I know that. I just want to have a ton of them. Ill have a couple of them on the module at a time and switch them out for pics every now and then. My favorite ones will prob stay on the module unless I want to use them on the rest of the layout like CNWMAN said    I also want a bunch of them because as many of you know my layout is mainly Construction and HEAVY industry based

Well they are RTR when I get them. The guy scrates the lowboys I believe and the cabs are just biefed up and super detailed Promotex cabs. All my cabs for the lowboys will be Peterbilts 379's and Mack CH 603's, my 2 favorte trucks

Hmmmmmm ill have to see about Hobby Warehouse, maybe I can take a trip down there or call them and find out and see if they would be intrested in buying some of this guys work and i'll buy it from Hobby Warehouse instead and hopefully save a few bucks on each of them   Thanks for the info Russ :thumb:

SAAAWEET!!!!! I just placed an order with Toy Train Heaven!!!! KILLER PRICES!!!! I stumboled upon them while looking for a kit made by Great West Models (Great West Pre-Stress) and HOLY COW MAN they have EXELENT Prices. So good I just placed a $233.73 order with them and I got everything I needed to build this module!!!

Josh (jbaakko) was looking on the walthers site and he asked me if I had ever hear of Great West Models and I said yeah and i wanted the Great West Pre-Stress FOREVER now but its been sold out and hasnt been instock at Walthers for some time now. I told him about it and he said what are you talking about they have it right here INSTOCK!!!!! I was shocked!!! I started looking around and I was seeing that everyone now had the AWESOME kit instock so I had to get it while its still available. Walthers Model Railroad Mall -- product information page for 24-507

I stumboled upon this website and saw there awesome price and I showed Josh and he said WOW they have TONS OF GREAT STUFF and AWESOME prices!!!! I began looking around and they have everything!!!!!!!! I was able to order everything I needed and from them and i would have had to place a couple orders elsewhere to get good prices like them on all the stuff i needed.

Heres there site: Models, model trains, scale model cars, plastic airplane models, diecast model cars

Since I had to have Great West Pre-Stress I decided it would be cool if I added it in on the module as well. Instead of a 2'x3' module ill be doing a 2'x6' module to include both the CAT rental facility and the Great West Pre-Stress Building      I should be starting construction on the buildings when it arrives in a few weeks (christmas has shipping slowed down and im also paying with a Money Order)

The lowboys that Hobby Warehouse has on sale is made by Boley. They also have some made by Herpa for $19.95 that are really awesome. My buddy Eli who has really gotten into kit bashing and super detailing trucks in ho scale, bought one of the Herpa trailers while I was there. He opened the package to check it out, and we found everything was put together with pins. The result is that the center section of the trailer is separate from both the front and rear sets of bogies, as well as the tongue. It also has complete air bag suspension details. They also have a rack full of Peterbilts, as well as chrome detail kits for the Peterbilts. I didn't look for Macks.

I had a Boley Lowboy a while back, wasnt a big fan of them lol. Now the Herpa ones are pretty cool. I myself have 3 sets of them and I love the fact that I can make them really heavy haulers or I can make them regular lowboys with a 2 or 3 wheel axles at the rear. The pins are a nice and easy feature they have. WOW a whole rack of Peterbilts!!!!
