What personalities would your engines have?

Ok I admit it, I've secretly always thought it would be fun to do this.

What personality traits would your locomotives have if they could talk and think, like the characters in The Railway Series/Thomas the Tank Engine?

You can give yours names if you want, although I haven't. Diesel engines can be included as well as steam, and the don't all have to be a**holes like "Diesel" himself!

C&NW semi-streamlined 4-6-2 #1617 is the fastest locomotive on the railroad and knows it, and is usually responsible for the crack express. She finds freight work beneath her dignity, is very proud of her bright yellow and green paintwork, and generally looks down her nose at any engine she considers "old", "slow", or "shabby". A bit of a combination of James and Gordon from Thomas the Tank Engine.

Union Pacific 4-4-0 #119 is the wise old sage of the railroad, like Edward or Toby. Has seen better days mechanically but has also seen just about everything and isn't rattled by much. Not as powerful as the newer, bigger engines but must work hard to prove he is still useful, or it's the scrapper's torch for him!

Southern Railway 0-4-0 #6636 is the lowly yard switcher, relegated to pushing and pulling cars into the proper order to make up trains for the other engines. He longs to get out of this boring routine and "see the world". Where have we heard this tale before...?

I did that alot when I was little... sign1

I think it's a great idea for a thread!

The only ones I can remember naming were:

"Grant" the Union Pacific SW7, a tough vetran that could handle any train over the branchline.

"Tracy" A enimic Bachmann GP40 what could barely pull herself about the yard.

"Ghost" An LL F40PH After a tragic wreck on a structurallly unsound bridge, it sits on an isolated siding away from everyone, a hulk just rusting away...

Ha ha! I love these questions. I haven't personified my locos (small bunch anyway) but we used to give all our computer servers at work personalities.

I'm looking forward to what UP SD40-2 has to say about some of his big locos :)

Hey, great idea. I haven't "named" any of my stable of locos, yet; but am going to start thinking about it. I have both steam and diesel, and I'd like to see some other ideas particularly for the diesels.

This is Gino (the Geep). Like most Penn Central locomotives he's irritable and a little anxious about the future. :) He may feel a little smug with the rare orange "C" in the logo that sets him apart from the usual white "mating worms" PC hearald. A husky fella, he has a strong work ethic and more than pulls his weight around here but he's suspicious of management and thinks the company is going to heck in a handbasket. Don't even get him started on the tension between the former NYC and Pennsy locos!

Fun thread idea!

interesting thread Andy:thumb:. i have never thought about naming my engines, though my son grew up with Thomas the train(ahh, those were the days). to kinda fulfill LoudMusic's request, I'll put three engines in here;). i am only going to put one of my big ones in here though because i think most of my big engines would have similar personalities, except my Challenger;) . announce1 OK, Chuck the Challengertooth1, is an old and wise engine. he has been around so long he's seen the rise and fall of the Big Boys, and has never been taken off the UP roster, even to this day:thumb:. he has lived a very busy life, and is enjoying his "semi retirement". when he is not running on a special excursion, he is resting while being worked on:thumb:. View attachment 31537 NEXT up is Stan, the SD40-2SNtooth1, Stan is on the move nonstop. he is just as comfortable in the yard, as he is as a helper out on the open road:thumb:. Stan is a little nervous these days though, he has been hearing the engineers talk of the SD70M's being the NEW SD40-2's:eek:. View attachment 31538 LAST we have Mike, the MP15DCtooth1. Mike has been REAL BUSY since the 70's in the yard, and on a couple local runs:D, but longs to be out on the open road like engines larger then him...a dream that will NEVER happen:(. I've been looking for this thread!

As the title says, I've been searching for it! Why you may ask? To put my engine on here!

Sally the F3 is an old desiel, being the last of her F-class, but she is still very spunky and energetic! Nowadays she runs the grain cars in and out of Riverside, he long excersion days over. She still wants to go on one last one, though, all the way to Union Terminal in Cincinnati, for she has heard the stories that it's the biggest man-made dome in the western hemisphere (now THAT is actualy true! It's number 2, with the largest being the Sydney Opera house in where else? sidney!), and she wants to see it. in the mean time, she's happy on her tasks in Riverside, but is also hearing that she's gonna get help from a new engine, and fears that her days may be numbered! (Three guesses who the NEW engine's gonna besign1 )

I've dug this thread out of goodness knows where an I know some people have never seen it. What do they think their trains would do if given life and thought?

Sorry I can't post any pics, but my layout isn't even set up yet and i don't own the right camera. Still, I've got two engines, both Pennsies: a 2-6-0 who, if given sentience, would normally be quiet and reserved, but becomes free-spirited and euphoric during the solitude of nighttime runs and loves the sound of his whistle echoing through the northern Appalachians. The other, an 0-4-0 saddle tank, would be somewhat quirky and talkative, at times annoyingly so, but has a good heart and is always willing to help despite chronic wheelslip problems, underwhelming strength, and a low top speed. Hopefully, I'll get some more engines and have my layout set up by the end of next summer.

i don't have any pics but i have to say me 2 geeps would be the 2 devoted twins that NEVER leave each others consist ,my SW-7 would have to be the lowly haggard yard hand that dreams of a better life and finally me only steamer a B&O consolidation.at the end of ( her) life she feels the pains of almost 40 years of work and her pistons cylinders leak and driver bearings rattle but shes still steamin along glad she has not met the scrapper yet. wooh this was fun sign1.i wonder if they'll ever make a train movie like "cars" suited for an age above Thomas ,it would be up there with the polar express and the train :thumb:.thanks for starting this thread .--josh
