p.s.
Ive also never been a member of a forum where there was so little arguing and fighting, kudos for that as well!

Thank you, thank you. The Gauge is a sanctuary, a place where good people meet and share. They share not only from their knowledge of trains and modeling, but from their personal lives as well. You are right, it is amazing how quick one can get an answer to just about any question asked.

As far as conflicts, well, there are so many other sites that one can go to if they want to get into an argument or are allowed to pick on others that we don't need to do that here. Rarely do we see anything confrontational. It is, as I said, a sanctuary, and everyone here makes a special effort to keep it a peaceful one. There's just too much hardship and turmoil in this world and a place like the Gauge is necessary to inspire people and do it in such a way they they are glad they came here. We have a dedicated group of members and staff that are, well....dedicated.:thumb: :thumb:

Part of the reason there isn't any arguing on these forums is because its so hard to argue about something we all love! We're all too busy admiring everyone else's work, whether its on the train model forums or the card model forums. Its pretty hard to argue about something everyone around enjoys.

Welcome to the Zealot community (I'm from the cardmodelling side though, so you probably won't see me around very much).

Actually, that makes me wonder a little; have any of you train guys tried incorporating card into your layouts? Card really is such a versatile medium that you'd find it pretty easy to custom build any traincars (or even the scenery) you wanted. You'd probably want to find some spare chassis for them, I don't think paper would run on track very well, or connect to other cars very well, but the upper parts could be pretty easy.

Rail Spiking Fool!
This is one of the few forums that I can come to where people don't start b*tching at each other within a few posts. The mods really do a great job here too and a are indeed helpful contributors. Mostly easy going conversations. When I post I tend to run on and on and on and on and....oh gosh...doing it again.

[off topic]

Hey Paragon is that a Cylon Baseship as your avatar? Do you have a high res pic you wouldn't mind showing? I'm a big fan of the new BSG series. I'd love to see it.

card? SURE! i built this boxcar out of card with a litle bit of stripwood for the underframe. The details are card, brass, and plastic.

But what I find interesting is that i have been to other railroad forums, and have witnessed some very heated arguements and serious name calling. I don't get it.

Yes, it is the basestar. I can post an image later, I don't have them available here.

What exactly do people argue about on a hobby forum!? That just seems impossible to me. That boxcar looks great as well, how long did it take you to construct?

It's amazing what people will argue about on some forums.

While doing searches on HO products I have come across threads from other forums where they actually argue about BLI putting ditch lights in the wrong place or that Kato is better then BLI,Atlas is better then Kato ect.,ect.Fanboyism at it's finest.

The worst place was the Atlas forums,I couldn't believe the arguments and flaming I saw there.I was thinking of joining, but not after what I had read just from my searches.

I like it here,I get a feeling of friendship and closeness here.Like we're all old friends talking about what we enjoy.

I have to agree with CRed, I find a great feeling of friendship here. I have trouble finding people with an interest in my hobby and finding this site was like hitting the jackpot. I think everybody here deserves a pat on the back. I love the help I can get.:thumb:

...What exactly do people argue about on a hobby forum!? That just seems impossible to me....
You name it, if there are two views, some will argue about anything. When I got into the hobby I saw one case where someone painted and decorated their loco and were very proud of what they did. Just about the first comment was, "it would have been nice if you used the right shade of yellow"....Uhhh, excuse me, but I thought that was a bit cruel. I once asked a technical question about a Tech4 DC power pack and I started a DC vs. DCC war. I bought one and got my answer, when I posted my findings, I reignited the war. Life is too short to have to put up with that, so I came here and found that someone could post a picture of a pile of dirt and a few sticks, or a sheet of foam, most remarks would be like, "nice start", or "if you did this____, it would help". Constructive criticism and encouragement, that's what it's all about here.

Then there are those trolls that will stop by just to start an argument or to say something nasty just to cause problems. We do what we can, but the folks here make it a lot easier for us to do our jobs...:thumb: :thumb:

The Staff of The Gauge have worked long and hard, volunteering our time here. We use Peter's Values of what he would like to see in a model railroad forum and we interlace these with our own "family" values.

I (and I'm sure ezdays too) never tire of boasting how great a forum this is because of the members and the staff....... Thanks!!!!!!!

Yeah... I for one has been to some forums where every one starts to flame, rant hypercritically about the other, and a whole lot of other dis-heartening things... And wham!!!! A arguement eurrupts and sooner before you know it people are taking up sides against eachother kinda like in USA North and south doing such and wham!!! A thread war and the next moment from that there are never constructive posts or any kinds of stuff that relays upon the subjectals of the forums and after that.... The whole place is read only. Cannot change, edit, make, delete, any posts. And eventually the place got shut down.

So that for me is a good reason to be here. No one fights with eachother or comes out of the blue to say things to hurt the other.. Nothing like that... I like the peacefulness to this place and I have concidered making this place a sort of a home to me..

I was kinda lurking in the background for a while, then I had found that this is THE Forum to be on. Great pics, Fantastic People, just an all around Great place to be..If you need help with a project, have a question about something, just about anything, you will have a answer, and in short order too. I have been on several other Forums and everyone of them have self important critics that seem to flame everyone elses work but never post their own. If you post a question here you get an intelligent answer where on other forums you get answered with another question or told to do a search, that the question you have asked has been answered before.. The Gauge is a great place to call home..oh and a big Thank You to the Mods for doing a super job of protecting us from spam, porn and other nastys..well done guys!:thumb:

When I started model railroading, it was said that you could start a schism in a club by whispering the word "couplers". That was back before Kadees. I'm seeing the same thing now on the British forums as they try to come to grips with the trade off between realism (a hook with 3 links of chain) and something that doesn't require the operator to get his eye and fingers between 2 wagons.
If you come to a train show in the Toronto area, there's a chance you'll see me making card building kits. And you might see some of the buildings that our Robin did.

I have been a member of this forum for a few months now. I found a link to it in another forum I belong to and now most of my time is spent here.I have seen to many times members in other forums contributing nothing but criticism for other modellers work. They seem to figure they are Gods gift to the model making community. I beleive if you are going to be part of a forum you should be there to share any knowledge you are able too. If you don't want to share any of your secrets why are you on the forum? to call down everyone elses work. I have seen a few very prominent modellers that do just that. This forum is different. There is nothing wrong with getting constructive criticism and anyone who thinks they know everything is a fool. Everyone can learn from anyone, whether they have 60 years experience or a month. I have seen some total beginners come up with some great ideas or bring in ideas from other hobbies. Thats what makes a great forum. Everyone gets along here great and we all try to help each other. I think we all feel welcome and want to contribute what we can. One thing I would like to see here though is a section for the younger modellers where they can ask basic questions and have some of the more experienced modellers help them out, maybe with some simple tutorials on wiring, kitbuilding, laying track, what have you. They are the future of the hobby and it would be nice to see them get a good start so they don't get discouraged and quit the hobby. To me this is by far the best forum on the net. My thanks to everyone who runs and contributes here. That is what makes this hobby so great. Ron

This is interesting because all of the above could also be said of the card modeling forum. When I first came across cardmodels.net (as it was known before migrating to Zealot), I thought the uncommonly civil and encouraging atmosphere was probably due to the hobby's enthusiasts being relatively few in number and widely spread.

Then after that forum joined Zealot, I discovered this forum was the same. Just last weekend I needed to know how tall a loading dock should be to service a standard box car, and within 24 hours I had multiple helpful replies. So then I decided the congenial atmosphere was probably common to all hobby forums, and that maybe hobbyists were just better-adjusted, happier people in general (I still think that!).

But here in this thread I read that some other model RRing forums are *not* so civil! So what's in common between the Zealot card modeling and Zealot model railroading forums? Looks like a big share of the credit goes to Peter's management style and the moderaters who implement it.

So ... thanks all around! :)
