My Final Trackplan.....

Josh, since you are doing the modern era, will you be runnng 50 and 60 foot long cars, or even longer? This will relate to your minimum radius and turn-out sizes. Experiment and make sure things work before you make it permanent.

Good thinking Gary, I already thought of it tho  hehehe

I made sure where ever I want big locos to run I put a #6 custom line
turnout in and at least a 22 degree radius, the mainline has mostly 24 degree radius cept for the spots that you can tell are WAY bigger then 24" lol

As for modern era, yes, Modern day BNSF and UP with a splash of CNW in there to  :thumb:  My cars will be between 50-60' and nothing bigger besides the well cars and 62' tank cars which will only run on the mainlines and in the refinery. I know modern day has alot of cars that are over 60' long but im going to stick with 50'-60', I like my cars not too long but not too short hehehe and my engines, I love them short and long. Almost all the turnouts going into industries are #4 cept the ones for the refinery, those are all #6's as the 62' tank cars dont take #4 turnouts too well lol

Also most of the radius's on the industrail spurs are at least 18 degrees.

Trucklover, I enjoy your trackplans as you don't care about having a mainline. You focus on switching and heavy industry.

If only I could convince you that 0-8-0s look better on a layout like that than Dash 9s sign1

hehehehehe Thanks NKP!!! I do care about mainlines I just care about industries more   Thats why my mainlines are never as good or long as most other peoples layouts

Hey now, dont get me wrong, I LOVE STEAM too!!! I just dont have any locos that arnt diesels, my grandfather on the other hand loves steam locos and we have a layout that he made about 10-12 years ago, full of steam trains and I member it was awesome, I havent seen it in about 10 years, its been in storage  but hes talking about setting aside some room to set it back up again and maybe even make a whole new one  :thumb: Since now im in MRR too, I can help him make and build a new layout.

You're mainline is longer than mine...or will be...since mine is 7' currently. But! Mine is O-scale...so that's equivalent to 3.5' of mainline for you.

This past weekend my dad had intended to cut up the old layout he made when I was a little kid. My parents are moving...and my dad has shifted fully to 1:1 scale preservation rather than 1:XX scale recreation. Fortunately, my brother's toddler has convinced my dad to just move it rather than permanently disassemble it. I'm hoping to re-kindle his interest into On3 or HO.

Josh, nice plans. Haven't been following the whole thread since it's so long, but when do you expect to finish the layout? Would love to see it in it's final form, with trains and all. That's when the real fun starts. But planning is good too. It's all part of the same thing. I remember, I spent over 6 months planning my latest. It payed off. Best of luck. Bob

Well at least the layout is safe for now and hopefully he will get back into the hobby to

Thanks Bob!!!!

The last plan that I posted is the most recent plan still with all the changes made and its looking im finally done with making the changes, I love this plan!!!!

As for when I expect to be done with the layout, I really have no idea, Im going to take this one slow, gonna do one complex at a time (both because I want to make and put in as much detail as I can to the buildings and areas and money also plays a role lol). My layout that I have right now I have been building for about a year now and I almost finished it. Im saying maybe 2-3 years for this one since its so much bigger then the one I have right now.

Wow! talk about spaghetti bowl! looks pretty good.

the only thing that would bug me is that a piece of the layout is over my bed, you know that will equal pain. remember to add padding or something on those portions of the layout!

Hey TruckLover, I just noticed that your desiel fueling facility is overhanging above your bed, although I don't know why I didn't see that when I saw your overhanging track.

sign1Nope, that wont be overhanging when I build the layout, that building will be built to fit that spot (that means cutting the walls to fit the angle so no overhang) I couldnt show this in Atlas Freeware, it wont let me change the buildings shape wall1 sign1

I've been away for a while, and am just catching up.

One thing that caught my eye - I'm trying to turn a basement bedroom into a multi-use room for trains as well an office and/or guest bedroom - how are you going to make your bed? Not much room to pull it away from the wall and get around the far side.

Also, you mentioned free-standing benchwork. The floor under the layout will need cleaning (sweeping and/or vacuuming) occasionally. Minimizing the number of legs will help with this.

One final suggestion - tape some cardboard boxes together to the planned benchwork size before you commit to real wood, and live it with it for a day or two. This will prove to you and your parents that you and the layout can successfully coexist in the space. I'm having to do that to demonstrate to my and my family's satisfaction that computer desks under the layout are feasible.

It's a gutsy plan, and I do hope it works out. Mocking up with cardboard first will take some of the guess work out of the plan, and let you make any needed corrections before they become costly.

my thoughts, your choices

WOW thanks Fred for the comments, suggestions and advise

My room how it is right now is set-up where you can pretty much just walk in, theres no walking around in my room lol, you come in and you can sit on my bed or turn around and go back out the door, thats it lmao. Believe it or not, my new plan will have more floor room and more area to walk in then my current layout/room set-up, I know shocking huh? Ive been like this for over a year now, im used to small spaces to change, make my bed.....

Also, you mentioned free-standing benchwork. The floor under the layout will need cleaning (sweeping and/or vacuuming) occasionally. Minimizing the number of legs will help with this.

Yup, true, My layout right now has legs about every 2.5' I think, ill be doing a similar benchwork design on this layout also. The really narrow spots (staging, behind dresser, and the part in the walk-in will be done shelf style using shelf brackets

Hey thats not a bad idea, thanks for the suggestion, it would help me get a feel for the new layout :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks again Fred

Hey Josh, What's the status? Haven't heard from you lately.

got a bit of a snag lol. I work at Lowes and ive been there for 3 weeks now, well I got my paycheck, I was thinking that I would be getting paid for 88 hours ($789 or somthing like that @ $8.86 an hour) but they only paid me for 54 hours ($416 with taxes taken out). Im missing 34 hours of work on that paycheck, turns out that I will be getting those hours on next paycheck. I have $45 left from that paycheck because I got a $290 fone bill and my dad gave me a $100 in advance to get me by while I was waiting for my first paycheck lol. So now I have just enough money to get my new BNSF Dash 8-40BW from Chris (CRed).

I hate when these things happen, I really want to get started on this thing!!!! I also still have to special order the blue/pink foam from work since its not stocked in CA. Its going to be a few weeks still before any progress pics of even benchwork come out wall1 wall1 wall1. I get paid next on the 26th and straight out of that paycheck comes another $65 for the other engine that Chris is selling, BN SD70MAc  . I should have neough money to buy all the supplies for the benchwork and foam and should be able to FINALLY get started when I get my next paycheck. Pshh, Money Issues, who doesnt have em'

Well, TL, you gotta budget that money out wisely. At the moment, it sounds like you need track and turn-outs and plywood and boards and screws and glue and foam way more than you need new locos.
