Shows scheduled for the Phoenix area

Here are the train shows that I have found for our area:
  • Oct 27., 9 to 3, Adobe Mountain RR Park
  • Nov. 3, 9 to 3, Church on Bethany and Central
  • Feb. 23, 10 to 3, National Guard Armory on 52nd St.
  • Mar. 8/9 , 10 to 4, Great American Train Show, Westworld in Scottsdale
I plan to go to every one except the one up at Adobe. Unfortunately, I have another commitment that day. There are a couple in Tucson, but I doubt that they are worth the drive down there, especially since one of them happens to be the Great American Train Show in January.

What about the one tomorrow at McCormick?
& why is the Great American Train Show in Tucson not worth the drive? Is it notorious for being a washout?

For some reason, I was thinking that was last weekend. I've not gone to one of those, but maybe I can find time tomorrow.

The only reason I said that is they'll be in Scottsdale a few weeks later. Why drive to Tucson when all you need to do is wait a bit and drive to Scottsdale:mrgreen: I've never been to a GATS show, the last one they had was about five years ago down at the Convention Center and I absolutely despise going downtown. Besides, we were living in Wickenburg at the time.

The GATS show in Tucson is on Jan 5 and 6. If there's enough interest in going down there, we could plan a trip. I would suspect that there might be a few different local vendors there than the one up here, but would it be worth going down there for that? Dunno...

Don-
I just did a search on GATS-- The show is now called The Great Train Show. I guess it is operated by Gats Limited.
I did note that the show in Tuson (Jan 05-06 of 2008) has been cancled. That is what I saw on there site.
The show at Mc Cormick Ranch, is call Rail Fair. Starts today (10/13/2007) at 10:00 AM. Will run again on Sunday (10/14/2007) not sure about the hours.
Good to see GATS or (what every there name is) is back in town.:thumb:
Thanks for the up date.

Yeah, you're right, they did cancel the Tucson show, that takes care of any wondering if we're going... They still have it listed in their ad in MRR, but I guess that's done months in advance. Glad you caught that.

GATS seems to have take over all the train shows including Greenberg's and the World's Greatest Hobby show.

I have been to lots of differnt shows over the years, and if your interest is in buying or selling and looking for bargains, GATS is not the best. GATS has more operating layouts, more stuff for the family, and more larger retailers.

I went to the McCormic park railfair today. I hadn't been to that in many years. It's mostly an event for kids - lots of small lionel layouts at child elevations :) There isn't much model railroad stuff for sale there - but I lucked out. Roy's trainworld has a small gift shop in the park, and they had a few tables outside with stuff for sale. Remarkably there were quite a few HOn3 items - and i lucked out and found a few pairs of passenger trucks that I have been searching for for quite some time. I also found a Labelle F&CC boxcar, already built up and decaled, for 25 bucks. Sometimes things come when you least expect them!

You are right, that get-together is mostly for the kids, and the parents they bring with them. I didn't go, but the odds are, TrainNut was there with his family.

Well I made the trip out to the Rail Fair- Like ezdays said, it is a good family get together.:thumb:
I did see TrainNut with his family out there, looked like the kids were having a good time.bounce7
Nachoman, looks like you found some good deals at Roy's train World.
He did have a lots of things for sale . Lots of brass locomotives, all used. Some looked very nice but the fact that you bought, as is where is, and no returns, it would be very hard to put 1 or 2 hundred $ up for one. I think that most of what I saw is still there.
I also made a side trip to Combats place to see his layout, before I made the trip to the fair. His layout is making good head way, looks like it will be real nice when the scenery gets done.:thumb:

Yep, I was there with the family. I also found some HOn3 stuff - 3 boxcar kits. I had no idea what was inside the boxes as they were sealed with no windows but I thought what the heck, at $10 each, I thought I'd be adventurous. Once I got home and opened them up, it appears there will be some work involved, but they have potential. I was dismayed to find out that there were no decals or trucks included. Guess I'm going to have to find those elsewhere. Temperatures were pleasant and it was not overcrowded like last year. Speaking of last year, if you want to see pictures of this year, find my thread for last year. It was virtually the same but lots of fun all the same. The only pictures I took of this year were a few of the family and one of the largest helix I have ever seen!

Just a reminder, the next train show in our area is this Saturday at the church up on N. Central. There are a few people on this forum that we haven't met yet, so let me know who's going and we can make arrangements to meet you there. I can pick some of you up on the way so we can go together... just let me know.

I may be in Phoenix Saturday visiting my Sister-in-law at Good Samaritan Hospital. If I can fit it into our schedule I will see you there.

Great Ray. I don't mean about your SIL, Sorry to hear about that, but it's always good to see you, Candy and Tony. We haven't chatted since the Prescott show. I'll look for you guys, hope you can make it.

It's on the SE corner of Bethany Home Rd. and Central Ave. I would go up 44th St. to Camelback Rd. Turn left and go to 16th. St. Turn right to Bethany Home Rd., then left again. There is a rather large church complex on your left, you'll see signs directing you to the swap meet, but it is in a meeting hall at the south east corner of the complex. I will PM you my cell phone # and you can contact me that way. You can also see my picture by clicking on "hey, it's us" in my signature. The prettier one is my wife...

Wowie, we got to the train show up on N. Central today.:thumb: Woodone, KMinspector and myself got there a few minutes after they opened. I'll have to assume that someone bought all the N scale stuff in the few minutes we were late, because by the time we got there, it was almost all gone. ... or could it be that there wasn't that much to start with????:curse: A half-hour later, we were ready to go, empty-handed.wall1

We did meet up with Jacob (b28_82) who was on assignment in Phoenix for a few weeks. Great meeting a Gauger from out of town.  But he didn't look like he was buying anything either. TrainNut, combat and Ray Marinaccio did a lot better than we did, they didn't show up thereby saving the five dollar admission fee.:p :p

it was OK though, got to spend some time at Woodone's house afterwards, and meet b28_82 and my new neighbor from two blocks away, KMinspector.

Oh well, maybe next time things will be better for us N scalers...

I can't believe there isn't more n-scale at these shows. I was at the one on bethany home last year and didn't see any n-scale at all(Isn't there one coming up in mesa over thanksgiving?

I decided not to go to the show today because there really wasn't anything I was looking to buy, and i really don't have the money to spend on stuff I don't need right now. I know how these shows go - once I am in there I feel obligated to come home with something, and just wind up with more unfinished projects!

Hi Don::wave:
Well like you said there was not much N scale at the swap meet.
$5.00 bucks to get in -- well it was worth that just to have the fellowship with you and the new N Scaler (KMinspector). Nice to meet new Gaugers in person. Was a plus for me as he is into N scale and has some Western Pacifc interest as well.:thumb:
Can,t beat that- Good day!

Well, I did buy something. I bought those pieces of turquoise to fix my ring with. Now that surprised me. Why in the heck is someone selling jewelry at a train show?  I'm kinda glad she was though, saved me a trip to a rock shop.:thumb:

And yeah, there is a show in Mesa coming up. I went to it two years ago and it was 75% O, 24% HO and one guy had a box of N scale and I made him an offer on the who box. That was the only N there, so I don't think it will be any different and worth the trip.
