Next Presidents Choice Train Set?

Just wondering if anyone has heard what the next Christmas Presidents Choice (Loblaws) Train Set will be?

I'll also try to find the next issue of Canadian Railway Modeller as it's often advertised in there.

Thanks!

Next one? our store hadn't sold out of last year's yet! Last time I was in there were 2 left (down from 7 a couple of weeks before) and Gerry went down to buy one -- don't know if they were on sale cheap or not.

Well, I recall that last year they advertised their new one in a fall issue of Cdn Railway Modelling. I'll keep my eyes out for their next issue just in case. I have heard (on another thread here) that last year's is now discounted. Cheers, Rob

It's going to be a CNR streamlined Northern with sound and DCC plus 5 passenger cars for $100.

Just kidding!!! My imagination suddenly got out of hand! :D :D

I'm hoping that's its a slightly smaller engine this year. The Big ten was really nice but I could use a smaller engine for my smaller layout!

The President's choice train set is issued for Christmas by The great Canadian Superstore. (It's a little like wal-mart.) The story goes that the vice president of the store is a model railroader and he started the whole thing about 12 years ago.
Anyway the set has the typical loop of track, transformer, and usually some cheap cars painted with Superstore President's choice logos. The real prize is the Loco though. It's an IHC engine that usually sells for about 120-140$ yet the whoe set is about 100$. The engine is painted for either Canadian pacific or canadian national.
Past locos have been CNR's Hudson, Bullet nosed betty 4-8-2 and last year's 2-10-2 Big ten.

I'll note that the cars last year were 5 (or so) ore cars, with a caboose. The ore cars were nice CN ones (don't know how accurate) while the caboose was lettered for PC. There was a previous set of ore cars when they did the 0-8-0.
The previous year the cars had advertising; no worse than washing UP lettering off before repainting (I think Rob did one.)
President's Choice is an in-store brand used by the Loblaws chain for some premium/limited run/interesting items that they sell. It's been going on for a couple of decades even though the then-president was moved on. They put out a fun Insiders' Report telling what new items are coming up (Memories of Muskoka fresh bait or whatever).

You must have the only store in Canada with any left. Around here, they went FAST! Sold out within a few weeks.

There's still baout 1/2 dozen in the Loblaw's near me - at full price too...
Andrew

Although I don't plan to buy one, I'm getting very curious to check our local Superstore to see what's happening there. The last time I checked was in early-September (I believe), and it was still full price then.

I'm not sure why I care or want to check (maybe it's because, deep down, I'm actually tempted to get one !!! )

Our Superstore now seems to be completely out. I don't think there were any in any of the related stores in Brampton or Georgetown.

For those who are curious about the 2006 train set ... tonight I visited my local Superstore and they still have several of the "Big 10" sets for sale, :)but at the original price of $99.99 !

Maybe they'll lower the price in late-November, or maybe they're not putting out a new set for this Christmas?

The Loblaws chain has taken a hit fiscally last year as Walmart is really laying a pounding on them. I doubt that you will see a new set this year probably due to financial reasons. Besides...I didn't really like last years because the center wheels didn't touch the rails. I picked up the Hudson though. That's a pretty decent engine aside from the PC painted cars. Some super detailling, a repaint and it would be awesome.

A few years ago I got the 60-60 Cn steam engine. I love that train and it runs great. To bad they are not making any more of there trains.peasoup

I checked at my local Sam's Club this past weekend to see what their new Christmas set will be.

Every year, Sam's offers a Bachman Big Hauler set....Last year it was a 4-6-0 with two cars and a trolley...with track for both. They also offered an additional two passenger cars separately. This year it is a freight set.

It is one of the best ways to get into garden railways as they are usually quite cheap...but give you an engine which could be upgraded into a fine engine (it's arguably the most popular garden engine...especially for kitbashing). I thought this years set was $140 (US) including 4-5 freight cars, the 4-6-0, track, and a transformer.

In a couple years I'll be picking up the classic LGB starter set with the Austrian 0-4-0, a red coach, and a blue coach. Some day I'll own the Zillertalbahn 0-6-2t and cars...
