The train's ground-breaking innovation lies in the fact that it can switch from diesel to electrical power without stopping, according to Bombardier.
This isn't even a hybrid in the sense a Green Goat is... this is like an FL9. (I believe those could switch on the fly.)

I'd be interested in knowing how they are counting emmisions. When running on electricity, the train isn't making any emissions, but I bet the powerplant supplying the electricity is... And if it is a nuclear plant, how much extra radio-active waste is produced?

I was saying the same when I saw this on the news. The FL9, and the Metro North (I think) P40's have shoes for the 3rd rail...

I think the only thing it has more, is a battery too, like the new GE Hybrid.

In that case, it's like the diesel-battery-electric boxcabs some US railroads used to have. Nothing new there.

Here in Calgary, they claim the C-Train (the local LRT) is zero-emissions. Then I find out that they're just counting the electricity from some wind farms as going to the LRT. You can't really say that it's going there more than anywhere else, since it's a shared power grid. The days of dedicated power stations for railroad electrifications are gone.
