Our Layouts - Photo Thread

Thank you, Gary. I am with you on the subject of colors. I think you got to be careful with colors. Too bright, shining colors will give the layout a toyish look. And it helps to have a color scheme for the ground cover of the whole layout and only vary this scheme lightly to blend it all together.

I think the shelf brackets are the easiest way to build the "benchwork". The price of the brackets was not an issue for me, as I only needed 6 of them – one benefit of a small layout.

Are you going to pull up the track and put foam on the entire layout, or just use it for hills and such?

I used 2" foam on the entire layout, and it sure makes it easy to put in ditches and streams and such.

The first one. I based the layout off of the 'world greatest hobby' starter layout trackplan, with some minor ajustments like making the passing siding the main siding. I plan on trying to make a river near the curvy mainline part on the far side, and hills on the corrners.

I agree completely. It did make it easy and was a "clean" installation. YOu only needed 6? I needed about 50 of various length... you do the math... OUCH!!!:curse:

I think that is best. I found that carving the foam for creeks and drainages was a breeze. I used knives and a wire brush. Yeah, it made a mess, but having the shop vac handy at all times made it bareable.

I third the bracket method. Installation was a breeze and they can support a few hundred pounds. So some wood for the benchwork and some n-scale trains should be breeze for the hardware.

Gary, the fence is made of .040" brass wire and some kind of fine black tulle that was used to decorate a birthday present my wife got. I’ll have to search some shops that sell the stuff to wrap up gifts for this tulle, cause there is not much left.

I soldered the wires together, then glued the tulle to the frame and painted it silver.

I'll have to find some also. It looks great! And I smiled at your previous comment of "The work bench works as a "storage bench" most of the time." I know the feeling! Every now and then I have to spend twoo hours cleaning up the workbench just so I have a place to work.

It's all this crazy scenery stuff! Once I get passed building the refinery, the dominos pizza building, and the variety printing backdrop building I just got, I should be able to tidy up the work bench a little. That always seems to give the room a "clean" look :)

I don't currently have a layout room...but I'll post some pics of the train room from years 5-18. I usually use the dining room table currently to set up some track. Most of my favorite power hangs out in the China Cabinet. Most of the rolling stock...and the rest of the roster hangs out on my third floor.

My primary work area is in one of our guest bedrooms...but I was displaced by two Chinese girls for the past three weeks...so I've been working on a tv tray in my living room. My layout space is the third floor of my house...but the space has to be shared with my guitar rack and amplifiers.

Here is the old layout room...my dad is a collector and preservationist...so the walls are lined with many builders plates and dozens of lanterns...and the picture of Pike Peak from the as viewed from the Colorado Midland...which I broke the glass out of by accident once upon a time...

You had a nice big spot for a layout back then! That musta been great! Surely you can find a place for a shelf layout in your new abode?

Do tell!

14'x15' and never large enough...plus I was never willing to eliminate the original 6'x9'...as it had the mountains and the scratch built trestle.

I'm slowly building modules...with the intention of a future double deck around the walls and island layout...bottom deck HO...top deck On3. I actually have adequate space now...but I'm going to be moving in 1-1.5 years once I finish grad school...so I'm focusing on rolling stock for now.

Breaking that picture was a sad day...all I remember was that it involved an argument with my mom...the main nemesis of our railroads expansionist policies...she always vetoed holes in the walls to access other parts of their basement. My dad was very upset with me/us for breaking the glass...but the picture is still nice. I suppose breaking his prized Detroit & Lima Northern #7 builders photograph would have been worse (the #7 was Henry Ford's personal locomotive once he purchased the DT&I).

Great pics everyone. I particularly like the industrial layout from FiatFan.
I don't exactly have a layout "room", We live in an apartment and my spouse agreed to let me have the space of a hollow core door for modelrailroading.
I have not 1 but 2 layouts on this space: a "BIG" 25" by 36 " layout and a micro switching layout.
Here is the picture:
( I kind of feel ashamed lol ) but the most important is to have any kind of layout instead of ... no layout at all.

I see nothing to be embarrassed about. :)

Remember...it's for fun!
Here are a couple of pics I took last year.

I edited this one to B&W because the colors came out a bit bright and it was harder to see details.
