OK Guys,

I am attempting to build the Halinski Bismarck in 1/100 scale. Since most
of you seem to be nice guys I am taking this chance that you will be encouraging and I will not have to put on flame-retardant clothing like
on some forums. I hope when I run across a problem someone will offer
some help. I will attempt to show some photos as well.

I'll be watching - I think you've won the hardest fight already if you have a place to put a model that big ;)

Who Said anything about a place to put it?

As Teddy Kennedy would say, "We will cross that bridge
when we come to it"!

You will get all the help and encouragement you could ever want and more, right here!

I have several versions of this ship as it is one of my favorites and I am really looking forward to seeing your build!
Thank you for sharing it with us! I know I will enjoy every minute of it!:thumb:

Wow, this will be fun to watch. What a monster! You printing yourself or having it done outside?

I'd imagine as big as the stock 1:200 version is, quite a few parts would be larger than anything a normal home print could do and will require a bunch of splitting parts into pieces!

Hi Rick,

Not too much of splitting parts into pieces. I have an Epson R1800 printer
and for large pieces I tape two (or more) pages together and the printer
can handle up to 50 inches in length.

Gonna be awesome! Looking forward to this one. We need to get Russell to build one of his US battleships at the same time ;)

There are a couple other build threads here for large military ships, might want to take a peek to pick up any pointers if you hadnt done one like this before. The hull seems to be the sticking point for most (myself included)

Hello Greg,

8 feet and 2 inches. Could not quite fit the deck or the keel
on a sheet of plywood, had to angle it.

Scott

So that was an 8' plywood sheet! I didn't realize that. You must be building in your garage or you must have a very large house. Most people here in Hawaii can't find 8' anywhere. Our bedrooms are smaller than those on the US mainland (some are smaller than 10'x10').

Good luck! Hope your significant others don't stop you once they realize what a monster you are building.

Wow, what a corker of a project. I'm currently buiding a 1/200 Bismarck is wood, and that is big enough. Yours will be an awesome display piece.

Shameless plug - My build is on the 'net at Build the Bismarck if anybody is interested.

I'm really looking forward to reading this thread.

Well, I certainly cannot compete with this awesomely huge build but I am getting ready to start on the Arizona from Digital Navy.
I have all the parts printed and formers are ready for lamination.
I will have to start a thread for it soon.

I still cannot distract from this 1/100 Bismark so I apologize for the intrusion, Scott.
I cannot wait to see more of this build! It's going to be awesome, I am sure!
Also, I need all the build tips I can get, for ship building in general, as this will be my first big one.

Looking forward to your every installment, Scott!:thumb:

Good Morning Everyone,

Thank you all for your nice comments and encouragement. I had
no idea I would stir up such commentary. Now I have to actually
not only keep up the work but I have do do good work since I have
placed myself in the spotlight.

To give you the visual treat you seem to expect here is a shot of
what I call the boathouse.

Enjoy,

Scott:wave:

1/100 - absolut great. As you perhaps know I build the Bismarck in 1/250 from WHV - from the detail he may be much easier when yours. Perhaps you want to sneek around to Kartonbau.de, as there is a report from as up-scaled Bismarck from HMV in 1/100!

WOW! So detailed! Is this an added detail by you or is this detail also in the kit?

Nice build! :thumb:

I wish I could build a big model like this in the future

I've been working up the courage to build Halinski's Jeremiah O'Brien Liberty Ship in 1/100 scale. At that, she'll only be 4.41 feet long, a tad more than half the length of your Bismarck.

I'll be doing my own scanning and printing. With a max of 8.5"x14", I'll have to split some of the kit parts, but not enough to worry me. I've test-built a couple of subassemblies--a deck gun platform and a crane--and they went together well. I should do a hull section next. I have some questions about the best paper weight to use. I usually print models on 60# card stock. I'm wondering if 80# or even 110# might be best for the hull's outer skin and some cabin sections. It might also be a good idea to add extra formers in the hull to give the skin more support. Does anyone have any advice?

I might try a smaller destroyer first (Gremir's HMS Badsworth?). In any case, I'll be watching your build and cheering you on.
No worries,
--David

Hello David,

One of the reasons I chose the Halinski Bismarck was because of the
reported good fit. I am happy to report that the fit is excellent even
at 1/100 scale. My printer allows custom settings that let me print
as much as 50 inches in length. I usually tape two pieces of paper
together and print oversize parts. The seam is only noticeable if it is
being looked for. Also, I use the premium presentation matte paper
in either 13 x 19 (Super B) or 11.7 x 16.5 (A3) for my oversize work.
Otherwise I use regular 8.5 x 11 (letter) for printing work.

I hope your Jeremiah O'Brien has the same fitas my Bismarck as it will
make your building experience much less stressful.

Best Wishes,

Scott:thumb:
