Not in Albuquerque but my brother lives in Williams and works for the railway there. August and September are probably the best times of year to take tat train trip. The land is flat around there and the horizon is a long way off - and august is thunderstorm season and I have seen many a great lightening show from the window of the dome car or the porch of the caboose on the train on the way back from the canyon. There are a few good places to eat in williams after you get off the train - gunfights in the streets and cowboy singers. A bit touristy and hokey, but still fun.

I found out after taking the train in Williams that I could have ridden in the dome instead of just in the dome car for $20.00 per person more. This was during the winter off season, so I don't know if the differential is the same in the summer months.

If you have the time and money to do it, go about 1 hour South of Flagstaff to Clarkstown and ride the Verde Canyon RR. It is a 4 hour ride down the Verde Canyon and back. The scenery is awesome!! The train is arrainged so that every pair of enclosed cars has a "gondola" (actually a flat with benches and a chain link fence as a guard rail) between them. The railroad only sells tickets to the coaches, and you can freely move between the coaches and the gons, stay out in the gons, or stay in the coach.

Been there twice since I was suppose to meet you there Russ. I love that ride. BTW, that's "Clarkdale"... Best bet, update to first class. There's less people in the car, the seats are plushier and the feed you snacks.:thumb: :thumb:

Thanks Russ, I recall you mentioning that some time ago. I might still try that one too. We got a day or two we can lengthen our trip.

EZdays, we tried for the 1st Class $117 a person; but they said it was loaded. I got a pack I carry with things for Pop (diabetic). So, I think we'll be good. Hmmm... You saying the Budd cars lack A/C or snacks?

Nacho, thanks for the tip on watching for afternnon rain and camera ops. Down here in Florida we can see the rain coming, too. Not as far...we got more trees, but just as flat in places ;-)

Forgot... We are going to hit Page and one of the Slot Canyons, too.
Got some family down in Tucson and a neighbor out in Payson... So, it should be a great all-a-round trip. Just hope Ma & Pa keep outt each others hair...hamr

On the grand canyon train, all but the harriman coaches have A/C. It's not very hot up there, though. It's a great place to ride with the windows or top down!
