Sometime in the 80s ( I think) Model Railroader had a sieries of articles about scratch building a USRA Mikado . I don't remember the Author (Gordon Odeguard?) .
I have an engine about 3/4 done , I got stalled at the point of building the driver crankpins because the way he was doing it required a jewelers die plate which I could only find if I was willing to shell out about a hundred bucks.
Every thing got put in storage when I moved in January, I have found the engine , but the magazines are somewhere in among 40 plus boxes of magazines at trhe very back of a 10 X 30 storage that is crammed to the door !!
I found & bought a die plate for 25 bucks on E bay, so now I can get back in business-- BUT I need the information in the MR mags .
Anybody remember the articles, & have them handy that could copy them for me? There were about 6 -7 installments, I don't need all of them, just the ones from the Crankpins onward.

I have them packed away somewhere while my house is being remodeled. You are right the series was done by the late Gordon Odeguard. I think Kalmbach offers reprints of all of their articles for a small fee for each article. Have you tried contacting them to see if you could get the needed reprints from them?

I had not thought of that, I'll give it a try. I think they have an index of articles , perhaps I can id the exact issues that way. I hope they don't have them packed away "somewhere" like you & I wall1

Well , so much for trying Kalmbach, nowhere on their site can I find anything about either an index or reprints. I also tried looking a NMRA to see if they had anything on an Index for various magazines -- I thought they did at one time but I had no luck there either.

Canada, eh?
On the MR Index site, I typed in the keywords "Odegard Gordon" and got a long list of articles, with the first reference to the project on page 9 of the list: the Mikado build started in Oct. '82 and ran, every other month, until Nov. '83.

If it ran "every other month", there couldn't have been an article in October and one the next November.

Well, it did start in Oct. '82, and there was an installment the next November, but...

Awright!! Lemme rephrase that: it started in Oct. and Nov. '82, then ran every other month until its conclusion, in Nov. '83. :-D :-D

Geeez- I have the same problem.

I'm looking for a photo MR issued showing an early Amtrak E8. Black with the broad band red and blue stripe. I need to know how that E8 looked from the nose. The photo indicated what the "wrap" was as it went around the curved nose.

I'm pretty sure it's a '72/76 issue in September

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Okay, I'm sorry for getting emotional- but I gotta have it! Do you understand me?- GOTTA!

Oh yeah-I also enjoyed the mag cover links from MR- I really enjoyed the Kinickinick railroad build.

I still have a few 70's/80's mags floating around in the "reading room". I just can't find that particular one I am looking for- (3) states- (1) bride-recently, (2) moves later, and a 3rd coming!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH:eek:

So uhmmmmmmm, any luck???wall1wall1wall1wall1wall1wall1wall1wall1
I know sometimes I look at the floor in the reading room and all of a sudden I realize "I'm not in Kansas anymore". Then I find Vogue.

What the...

Okay- so- everyone stop being slackers and deliver the photos/articles we need. OR!!!!! I'll just sit here and be quiet.

Mark, the photo that you're looking for is in the January 1972 issue of Model Railroader, on page 39. However, the picture is an almost direct side view, leaving the stripe treatment on the nose up for speculation.
The unit is ex-Penn Central E8 4316 (you might be able to find pictures on-line using this info). The body is black, with natural stainless steel Farr intake grills. In the left-side view, the top of the broad double shaft of the blue Amtrak arrow ends at the number board, and is cut-off at an approximately 45 degree angle, extending forward towards the bottom of the stripe. Ahead of this, and on a similar angle, is a continuation of the double stripe, in white, its width not quite the length of the number board. This is continued on, in blue again, to form what appears to be a very broad "V" on the front of the nose. There appears to be lettering or a logo, in white, in the centre of the "V", but it's impossible to say what it is.

Edit: Mark, I googled "Amtrak 4316 photos" and found a 3/4 view in the second entry. Your turn to "get off the pot". :p:-D:-D
It's a good thing that I saw the pics, too, as the diagonal blue stripe doesn't form a "V", as the side view would suggest!

Need M/R articles

HOOOOOOOOORRRAYYYYYY!!!

I FOUND 'EM!!
Went to my overstuffed storage ( had to get out of my overstuffed chair :p ) & dug around for an hour or so & I found the set of copies I had made of the entire series, including some pages enlarged or reduced to make patterns of them.
So now I am back in Business, thanks for all the help & advise on how to find them elsewhere.

Need M/R

That's great Dave! See? It pays to save EVERYTHING! :)
Good luck with the project!
Ralph

OH, I DO!

I had a friend with me when I was searching--- He picked up a little plastic fuse box & asked "what's this stuff" --looks like dust or sommin' "
It was a little bit of debri from the neighbors bushes, fine little pieces of bark like stuff that I had collected to sprinkle on decks of log cars, worked great! He could not even comprehend when I told him that was "scenery material"

Now what would be nice is if someone can remember when M/R did the Mel Thorndurgh series on building a Brass Pacific, I have thos Mags too but have no idea of what year they did it anymore.
