Ocalicreek builds a scalescenes.com card structure!

Hey guys! I'm one of the cardmodels.net refugees that have recently joined the Zealot forums. I'm trying to catch up on the vast number of interesting threads over here at The Gauge, and just found this one. Cardstock structures seem like such a perfect match for model railroading, this thread really shows that potential.

Wow, all you guys who built the ScaleScenes freight house did a great job! If you like their models, be sure to also check out Clever Models. They also offer card models of North American structures in N, HO, O and S scales. Like ScaleScenes, they have excellent graphics. There is also a British outfit, Metcalfe Models. While their subjects are in British architectural style, some are generic enough to work in an American layout.

Oh - a note on humidity. I am an American living in Shanghai (China), which is about the same lattitude as New Orleans, and has similar weather - extremely humid. I have card models in my apartment that are now about two years old, they have not warped. Other card modelers have reported no problems under varying levels of humidity as well, so you probably don't have to worry about that.

Keep up the great work exploring the potential of card models!

Welcome, and thanks for checking out the thread! If I ever get the edit privelege for the older posts I'll fix the pictures, if I'm able. I have been saving cardstock for a few months now and will be doing some scratchbuilding eventually, structures, mainly.

You must check out "Robin at his Best"

over in the Reference section, under The Academy. His work is mostly N-scale, 1:160, so tiny stuff but just great craftsmanship.

Thanks for the link, I took a look. Unfortunately, the graphics are all messed up, they are alll at extremely low resolution (they look like thumbnails blown up to a larger size). However, it was still very clear that Robin was a master modeler, and completely understood the versatility of paper/card.

It's great that all his threads are archived into one place, a lot of excellent advice and inspiration concentrated there.

Thanks again!

O scale

I think that this model turned out great. Awesome job everyone! Does any know how I could modify this print out so that it is O scale? What about any card model sites that offer O scale? Thanks

Unfortunately, the scalescenes models are only available for download as HO or N scale models. However, you can get around this:

From the FAQ page at scalescenes.com:

Can I resize the HO version to another scale?

Yes, if your printer has a scaling option, it is a simply enter a reduction percentage into your printer’s ‘Page scaling’ section. Please note: Enlarging the kits to larger scales can be difficult as some page tiling maybe required. Also ensure that you adjust the card thickness recommended in the instructions accordingly.

You will lose some resolution in the final printed image as you scale up, but that might not be a problem, especially if you plan to use the model as a background structure.

Good luck!

Actually, the freight house is still available. In the upper left corner of the scalescenes.com website, you can switch between the ScaleScenes USA site (with the freight house) and the ScaleScenes UK site (with some kind of train/bus shelter). I bet you're seeing the UK site as the default when you go to the website.

If that doesn't work, let me know.

Just checking out the scalescenes.com site and WOW, check out this new Factory-warehouse!

Scalescenes.com - UT026 Factory-Warehouse

Very cool with great possibilities for expansion/kitbashing. Anyway, as you can see from my signature, I'm working on completing an old project. I've got several saved up just for a time like this, when resources are tight and the LHS isn't so local. Of course, England is only a click away thanks to scalescenes et al and their free downloads. But heck, the latest warehouse is only 5.99! No, I'm not getting kickbacks for the advertising here, just excited about it. Perhaps after I work on a few other projects...

Alright, back to lunch, er work.

I just finished the N scale version yesterday. It was my 1st experience with paper-models. I like the result but it takes ( at least ) as much time to build that depot than it would for a similar plastic model.
Thanks to all who posted informations about building that specific structure, that thread helped me a lot.

Very 'clean' edges, and astounding work knowing that's N scale. I may just have to build one in N someday, just to say that I did it. But for now I'm happy with my HO version! Thanks for sharing, Jacques!

Thanks for the nice words from both of you.

To be honest with you steamhead, that structure is not weathered yet ( I feel ashamed for the applause I don't deserve ), it's the "out of the box" version with no signs and no weathering. Some weathering with artist pastels would help to mask the "glue mark" problem on the brick next to the wall capping.

I agree 100% with you ocalicreek, the instructions for installing the sliding door are not very clear. With the help of your pictures I installed the sliding door using your technique. It looks good and slides nicely.

Not bad for a 59 years old eyesight ( I just got retired 2 months ago ).

So...Is that "look" paper..?? What about the faint rust streaks on the base of the ramp..??
If so, where can I get me some..??

Gus.

Gus, you could download the N scale version from scalescenes.com and maybe try to scale it up ( Just a guess, I'm not a photoshop expert ).

Yea, these models are pretty nice in that they are already weathered as soon as they come out of the printer. Makes it easy to avoid the "brand new building" look.

Jacques.......great Job, your workmanships flawless!!.............I cant believe at your age you are still in N scale.
At 45 i went to On30 figuring 1/48 would suit me for the rest of my life.....I sold a rather large N collection.

Good to see somebodies eyes are holding out :)
