Styrofoam scenery?

Check out Woodland Scenics stuff. They also use styrofoam.
Their plaster cloth is a lot less messy than dealing with spackle.
They even have kits you can buy to make the whole layout.
(Provided you're making a 4x8 layout)
Did you use regular white styrofoam or the pink foam used for insulation?
The pink stuff seems to be prefered by most. (No little white balls everywhere)
I've been thinking about experimenting with the spray foam insulation that comes in cans. I think that would make for some interesting landscape.

I use blue foam sheets to build up the majority of the scenery with WS plaster cloth over the top of that. Sometimes, I use wadded up newspaper on top of the foam and then put WS plaster cloth on top of that. Finally, on top of the WS plaster cloth, I apply wall joint compound with a foam brush or my fingers for more detail. Check out the first layout in my signature for extensive examples of this technique as well as the other links for different examples. I'm sorry that the pictures don't display as they used to but I think Peter is working on that. Just click on the picture links within the threads and they display normally.
I've seen a guy use the foam in the cans before and after it set he carved it up. It came out real nice! I use white foam for building up scenery and then plaster it. Works out real well. Just bust it up over a trash bin, you'll still get some balls but it works just fine. Normally when covering it I use an old tee shirt ripped up and soaked real well in the plaster, then just lay it over the foam and when it starts to set you can use an old paint brush to help smooth it out. Tons of ways to get it done!
I contstructed hills and mountains out of a web of carboard strips i quickly hot glue gunned together. I stuffed crumbled paper under some of these for more support as needed. Then I covered the carboard web with heavy paper towels soaked in a diluted Elmer's glue mixture. It takes a couple of days for it to dry but leaves a firm yet flexible shell. I paint the surface with an earth toned latex and then use various ground foam and other products to cover it.

Tankster check out my new layout thread as well as the old layout thread in the past 2 layouts I tried pretty much as many options as I could just so that I could say I tried it.It comes down to whatever is available after all you won't be parking anything heavy on it.
On my last layout I made the mountains and hills with styrofoam sheets carved into shape and roughed out with an old steak knife. I then poured a watery plaster mix over it. It came out looking pretty good.
