What a MESS

Since some people are complaining about limits on inline images, let me give my druthers. No inline images. Why, because people abuse them by posting a ton of huge images to discussion threads (versus photo threads).

This may be fine for those with broadband connections, but it is not fine for people on dialup. Some folks in rural areas of the US are limited to 26.6K (not 56K) because of a telco practices. Try reading a thread that asked a technical question with that kind of speed, only to have a member answer by posting a string of high resolution images as an "answer." Even so-called 56K connections and 128K ISDN are unsuited for those kind of graphics.

And since this is a world wide forum, non-US members should be considered. I know that in some parts of the world, people used to be charged by the amount of data they downloaded. I don't know if that is still the case, but if it is, it is another reason to limit images in a reasonable manner.

Another forum I belong to (also running vBulletin software) automatically presents thumbnails (limit four) at the bottom of a post. If a user wants to look at the photos, he can click on the thumbnails and download them. If he doesn't, he isn't forced to eat the bandwidth. In my opinion, that is the perfect solution.

And Peter, let me add my thanks for the job you are doing.

horse crap!!!!

knowone in the US is stuck with just dial up. that might just be all that there phone company offers,

if so try these.....

1. cable net
2. theres atleast 6 sat internet company's
3. theres all kinds of wireless internet companys around. (in se iowa any town that gets water from rathben lake can get wireless if there within 20 miles of the water tower. every tower has an inntena on top of it for the net)

now if you cant aford to pay for the others then thats a different story

Peter, is there a reason the "Quick Reply" box doesnt work...or is that just me?

And FYI, for those of you who are having trouble navigating past the other hobby boards...Just put this link in your bookmarks.

Quick Reply isn't working, apparently, but worse than that, this site is loading VERY slooooooooooow. I am on a 8MB cable line, and it's slower than dial up. I wonder if it's a security setting, or???

From what I've seen so far, I don't like this new look as well. The layout if very busy and confusing. I hope it can be changed back to how it was. Rob

Apparently you know more about it than I do. But just in case you don't, look up latency (hint: It has to do with how well your six satellite systems work with certain applications that can't tolerate the delay.)

Look up rural (hint: Broadband service in many if not most of rural America is virtually nonexistent. It has become a political issue with talk of the digital divide between the city and the country folk.)

Look up Appalachia (hint: wireless broadband is only available along major highways, and those of us not living next to one can't see the signal because of something called hills. Look them up, too).

Nice to know you are one of those who thinks The Gauge should be operated only for those with the benefit of lots of cash.

Are you one of those threatening to go elsewhere? Make my day. Tell me yes.

Part of the reason that pictures end up in threads like these is that one picture usually is worth a thousand words. I don't mind typing the thousand words also, but many people, even those looking for an answer to a problem, won't read words with no pictures. And I do agree with what you're probably thinking about that, but this is still supposed to be a place to share information.

This may be fine for those with broadband connections, but it is not fine for people on dialup. Some folks in rural areas of the US are limited to 26.6K (not 56K) because of a telco practices. Many of us with a high-speed connection don't consciously load up a thread with pictures just to bug folks on dial-up. I started out on the Gauge with a dial-up connection, and was a fairly prolific picture-poster. It is easy to get carried away, though, on a high-speed connection.

And since this is a world wide forum, non-US members should be considered. I know that in some parts of the world, people used to be charged by the amount of data they downloaded. I don't know if that is still the case, but if it is, it is another reason to limit images in a reasonable manner.

It's possible that this might happen here, too: full-size photos in the Photography thread, and thumbnails in all of the other Forums, although the pictures interspersed amid the text, as appropriate, might be easier to understand.

And Peter, let me add my thanks for the job you are doing.

Perhaps when Peter has finished the rebuild, we can see if the idea of limiting picture size in some Forums can be done here. There's still lots of fine tuning to be done.

what are ya going to do when dial up is no longer available? i cant get dial up even if i wanted it, its not offered here, and not in alot of other places . thats the only reason why i have dsl now. dsl costs me 5.00 more then the dial up. (unless i went to a faster speed)

What stuff unrelated to trains?
Are you talking about the other hobby forums?
It's already been posted several times how to bypass that.

And I kind of like the eBay adds.
some of it might be my stuff.

Hobbies - The Gauge

That will open up sort of a "Homepage" for the Gauge.
If you click the uberlarge Forum Index link on this page, it will open up in a new window. I think Petere is going to fix that soon. However, if yuo scroll down, there is a list of most recent posts just like there was on the old Gauge homepage. If you click on one of those, it will bring you directly into the forum without opneing a second window.
