All,
I found a HO Bachmann Union Pacific M - 32 railmotor, yellow body, grey roof, red decals. (maybe called a doddle bug??) superbly weigthed, and detailed for $35 second hand. I got it because it really resembles the Victorian Railways DERM of the 40's - 60's. (Diesel Electric Rail Motor) Note the arched single window, the side cargo doors, and the side roof ladder together with exhaust etc on the front roof. The UP M - 32 looks similar to these. (actual VR DERMs) The model in the pic is a kitbashed bachmann "doddle bug" in N scale. I want to re do the livery into the blue/yellow of the Victorian Railways of the era or Garahbara. However, I cannot get the case off. I don't want to push it too hard in case I break the detailing (steps, handrails, ladders, windshield wipers etc.., or worse, crack the body) Does anyone have one of these, and give me any hints how to get the case off?????Thanks, TOOT! Hi Woodie,
It is a Doodlebug, and if it's the Bachmann one, it has a single large flywheel. Getting the body shell off the chassis is a bit of a pain-in-the-A.. but if you use a couple of knives down the sides, and very gently ease out the sides, you will notice the lugs which hold it in place. Once located, it's easy from there. I have a Doodlebug which I cut down and made it into a Brill. Shamus NARA Member #24 http://www.badger-creek.co.uk |

Thanks Shamus, Your brilliant. I had found the lugs, but just wasn't prepared to pry the case off hard enough. It seemed to be stuck at the ends, as if i had missed a screw or something. I did end up pullin the drive wheels out of their spring loaded seat, and the drive shaft from the motor, doing all this, but I have managed to get that back in place. Undoing the two screws underneath caused that, as they only hold the motor on, not the case.
Now.... to do or not to do. I just looked this engine up on the web for pricing etc. It's around $300+ AUS (and that's without importing it!) I paid $60 AUS for it. Do I wreck it by giving it my first attempt at painting it into another livery and decals and stuff or not????? It is in perfect unmmarked as new condition.Shamus, to get the windows unstuck from the inside, just a craft knife razor blade slid underneath to cut the glue contact should do the trick? I dont wanna break them either. Should I leave the handrails/steps/ladder steps, lights, wipers, etc on or try and remove them..... and risk bending breaking them too? Just try tweezers to remove them? Maybe wobble/bend a little to remove them from the lug holes? Oh well... suppose you gotta learn on something. And a UP yellow googlebop is NOT my prototype for Garahbara! ![]() TOOT! |

Oh Shamus, By the way, your boglepoop, is it the HO one? and is a Brill just the shorter version?
Yep. Mine is the Bachmann one, with the large single flywheel. Thanks, TOOT! |

Oh well.... too late now. The UP goggleboop is now a shade of dark blue. Second coat to come. Removed all the windows and as much detailing as possible.
I did break one of the thin window frames on the drivers window, getting the windows out though. Oh well. It stuck to the window, so it should go back when I put the window back. ( I Hope!) Vicotrian Railways DERM, here we come! Im not going to shorten it though, not quite ready to cut things in half yet! ![]() TOOT! |

Hi Woodie,
All my windows came out in one go after I soaked it in warm soapy water. Yes it is a shortened down Doodlebug, now only 5" long. cheers Shamus NARA Member #24 http://www.badger-creek.co.uk |

My "Doodlebug" is now a VIctorian Railway DERM lookalike. Finished it of and it came up really well. Pics of the result are at http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~niceboys/june20011.htm
Photos are not that good, but they get the idea across. TOOT! |

Sideways....
Welcome to The Gauge! Unfortunately, I don't think you're going to have much luck with the links/photos in this thread - the last reply before yours was June 2001...! You might be better off starting a new thread with some pictures of your own to encourage some feedback. Andrew

here's my model. I'm surprised some pieces didn't get broken after it had been packaged up for so long.

Sideways, I like the doodlebug. I was tracking one on eBay, but the price when higher then I was willing to pay. It looks like Bachmann is getting ready to release these again with DCC in them. I may just wait until they do. I saw a price of $99.00 on Wholesale trains Your Low Price Hobby Superstore- There's fun for everyone! Kent

I rebuilt all of my old photo threads after the move, but I don't think that too many others bothered: it does involve a lot of work. ![]() ![]() If you're interested, here's a link to the Thread which contains links to all of my restored Threads. A fresh update... Wayne |
