I hope this helps to clarify, old trackman,
you need to use break-before-make so as to isolate one circuit before connecting the other.

Center off is also a good idea:

The first diagram you show is exactly like the one I found.This thread is almost coming to an end. Thanks for all the replies and the interest everyone showed.
