Default The OOPS Contest (AKA &^%$($ IT ALL!!)

The goal: This is a contest about mistakes. I hope this turns out to be a learning experience for everyone.

What to do: Submit pictures of your mistakes however small or large they might be. Explain what the problem is with your model. Explain what you did that caused the problem. Explain how you fixed the problem (if it was possible). Show a picture of the problem area after you fixed it.

I will award points for each problem submitted:
2 points for a picture of the problem
1 point for explaining the problem
1 point for explaining how you fixed (or could have fixed) the problem. If you use the could have fixed option you cant just say made a new part.....
2 points for the picture after you fixed the problem
1 point for detailed model info

bonus points:
1 point for giving an alternative way to fix a problem posted (you can give alternative ways to fix your own problems!)
2 points for helping someone fix a problem they did not have a solution for in their opening post (sorry for this you cant just say make a new piece - you need to be more creative than that)

You may submit entries for the same type of problem with a different solution for full credit. You may also submit entries for the same problem with the same solution for 1/4 credit that someone else submitted previously (rounded up to the nearest point). However, no one person may submit the same problem with the solution.

The Time frame: The first part of the contest will end July 31st and the second with end at midnight Dec 31st in my time zone (central standard time)

Why is this two parts you may ask? Because I feel like giving out two sets of prizes!

The two people with the most points at each deadline get a model from Dewaynes site from me to practice not making mistakes. The points roll back to zero for all contestants after the July 31st deadline so everyone starts fresh.

I will be the sole judge for points in this contest. If you feel you got ripped off, it is very possible I may have missed something - please do let me know. However please don't argue with me. It will affect my judgment adversely.

The point awards are subject to change based on input from anyone and my agreement until February 1st. If the points system changes after you make a submission you will be allowed to make up these points in a follow up post. (or editing your original post)

If anyone wants to offer a prize for this contest please PM or email me.

An example submit

(2 points)

There is a small gap between the fuselage section right behind the cockpit (1 point)

The model is a Pfalz d.III a by Marek from Dewaynes site http://www.teuton.org/dbarnett/ (1 point)

Later posts by others:
Dewayne - pin the formers together and sand them to make them the exact same shape (2 points)

Golden bear - I found that offsetting the bulkheads a little but not as much as 1mm really helped with the edge gluing (2 points)

Now if I had suggested a way to fix the problem myself in the original submit they only would have gotten one point even though I hadnt really fixed it. I did not get points for explaining how I fixed it or submitting a photo after it was fixed (because I didnt!)

Thanks all and I hope you enjoy!
Chris

Chris, 2 questions:

- Is this only for errors made after the start of the contest (ie now).

- Are multiple entries allowed? (I'm thinking some of us could have almost daily screw ups to report! )

Thanks, this is a great idea!
Rick

Well.......... I'm not sure it can be a learning experience............ but here lately those ARE the only models I have been able to make

AND it seem that I do have it down to a fine art!

I'll break out of my "builder's block" soon enough..........

Oh............. here is a heads up............. there should be a new release from DGA through DeWayne real soon. I've got to work up the PDFs...........so y'all keep watching!

Default Ooops

Here's my retro biggy. When I built the Delphin, I discovered a few fitting errors, then it finally dawned on me, the wing was upside down! The only thing that could be done was to print out a new wing assembly an build it correctly. The lesson learned.... PAY ATTENTION!!!

Corrected wing. There really was no other solution but to rebuild the wing.

I don't know that I'll have a new screw up in time for this unless I start another butt joined kit... although I do have an Orlik kit lined up after the He51. I don't think that I can surpass the trauma associated with the mess that my father made of the Orlik P47 though... go check out that thread for the amusing story and pictures.

Pfalz dIIIa by Marek

I was putting the covers on the wing roots and it slipped out of my finger and smack right onto the wing. I couldnt get a grip on it and it stuck. Wrecked the wing. Then I started it wrong and couldnt tell and the blasted thing didnt line up at the back. I think Iwill trim that up when I am done being angry about it. (yeah its been a while but I am getting over it) heh heh

I wont be fixing the main oops though. I want to get on to my sons plane so I can take it to the model show.....

p.s. will put this in the build thread too since its part of it!
