Corn fields

Here a good question:

Since I am modeling the Rock Island, a midwestern US railroad. How do I simulate the corn fields of the midwest? Any ideas?

ASTROTURF!

Get an astroturf doormat. Cut a piece to the desired shape and thin out the "corn" into rows. Apply to layout deck.
