Hello all!

I'm starting the build of the Kübelwagen.

The book contains 30 pages, where 14 pages are instructions. There are 138 construction points. The print is wery good, and I'm looking forward to this one. The book I have is in 1:25 but I have ordered the 1:16 book from Modelik. And in the meantime I have tried my best to scale it to 1:16
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/201/image193nt.th.jpg (http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image193nt.jpg) http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/7043/image204zv.th.jpg (http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image204zv.jpg)

So my first report comes here. I started with the wheels this time, since I have found out that wheels are not the most funny part to do, so I'll take that first.

Here are the drawing of the wheels.
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/1069/kubel14dq.th.jpg (http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel14dq.jpg)

I started by cutting the tiresides out first. The frame is glued to 1mm karton. With the Olfa circle cutter there are no problems cutting out the centerparts. The major problem as I see it with making of tires are to get the sides bent the right way.The way I do it is as follows.First I use the score tool tol score along the line. Then I use a small tweezer to bend the sides to the right angle as shown on the second picture.
http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/6033/kubel22fk.th.jpg (http://img236.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel22fk.jpg) http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6667/kubel32jb.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel32jb.jpg)

Making of the tireframe goes as follows. The two kartonparts are mounted together with the base for the tracks.I glue this parts bit by bit to assure that they are aligned correctly. When the outside is done, it's time to mount the inner part of the tire.I do this the same way.Glue it bit by bit, so it's not getting messed up.....(as I have done before). The finished result seems rather good.
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6264/kubel41ho.th.jpg (http://img86.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel41ho.jpg) http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/6545/kubel66dn.th.jpg (http://img213.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel66dn.jpg) http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1541/kubel70hb.th.jpg (http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel70hb.jpg)

Mounting of the sides are quite easy.I put glue on the outer and inner part and place the side on place. It doest fit at once, but as i use a knitting needle and my fingers to force the side into place, it fits in the end.
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7103/kubel89dh.th.jpg (http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel89dh.jpg)

Time for the pattern. This is not the most enjoyable part.....cutting out the tiny pieces can be rather intense.....When the job is done, I put some glue to the center part of the track, and alighn it to the center of the frame. When it is dry, I put glue to the "flips" 5 by 5 and bend them down the side
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/585/kubel94iu.th.jpg (http://img87.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel94iu.jpg) http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/309/kubel108cw.th.jpg (http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel108cw.jpg) http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/1050/kubel119vk.th.jpg (http://img217.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel119vk.jpg)

Time to make the center part of the wheel. The parts are cutted out and are ready for mounting.I paint the edges here(not sure if It's done on the first pic) The parts has a good fit so far. The tire is ready painted and soon some chalkdust to make the final finish. Now I just have to get the hexagon punch set.....

Johnny,
Where do you find the hexagon punch set? I have seen various posts on different sites where people are making these wonderfully uniform and tiny hex shaped parts to be used as bolt heads or nuts on different models. I would like an easy way to make lug nuts for the truck wheels on my Jelcz tipper truck.

You can get it at RaiRo and I also saw it mentioned from an English site, but I can't remember where....

Johnny: I have learned a lot from observation of your building techniques and look forward to following this one as well! Keep up the good work!

I took the liberty of firing the product info on "The Nutter" tool over to Micro Mark. (www.micro-mark.com) Hopefully, they will make it available in North America, as it is right up their alley.

Regards from Canada,
Jim

Hello josve,
Great job on those wheels!
I find the wheels to be one of the most challenging parts of a model.
Your doing a fantastic job! Can't wait to see more!
Russell

Thanks for your kind words Russel!

I also find the wheels both challenging and not at least time consuming....and a bit dull when the wheels are the last thing you do on a model....you work on wheels for hours and hours.Thats why I started with the wheels on the Kübelwagen, getting the "worst" part done first :)

3 weeks!
You must have been doing a lot of skiing and fishing!
I am glad you are back at this model again.
I really enjoy your builds. You are very talented.:)

LOL , sorry for beeing so slow!
But I'm building this car at work.....and I had to order the model in 1:16 since I only had bought it in 1:25, so it took some weeks to deliver it to Norway :)
And it has been a lot of skiing, easter and two weeks off work. Not much done on the Kübel those weeks.
Now I have got the book in the mail, so tomorrow I'm starting nights again at work, so I hope for some quiet shifts :)
I know I could just rezised the 1:25 book I have, but I like to have the original to be sure the measurements are correct.

Now that the book in 1:16 has arrived, I'm ready to continue the build of the Kübel.
The book contains 5 pages of written instructions that I dont understand at all :) and 10 pages of drawn instruktions and 17 pages with parts to cut out.At this stage it seems I have taken water above my head.....It might be a harder build than thought, but I take it as a challenge.I have searched for construction reports with no luck in hope to make it a bit easier.
But here we go!!

The book in 1:16 and a page of parts that are in very good quality, both the print and paper.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7650/kubel1b2bz.th.jpg (http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel1b2bz.jpg) http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/333/kubel1c6tt.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel1c6tt.jpg)

I started with the hood, and the support for the spare tire.
The drawing of the supporter
http://img289.imageshack.us/img289/2614/kubel162kn.th.jpg (http://img289.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel162kn.jpg)

Parts are cutted and ready for mounting
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/8996/kubel177bb.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel177bb.jpg)

The parts are mounted on the hood and some small parts left to go
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/2946/kubel180xj.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel180xj.jpg)

I have left out part 62 to "save" it from destruction
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/3309/kubel197tu.th.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel197tu.jpg)

With the spare tire in place.

The underside of the hood contained a tank.

I also glued the sides on 1mm karton and cut them out.
http://img270.imageshack.us/img270/9730/kubel230bl.th.jpg (http://img270.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel230bl.jpg) http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/6602/kubel248kr.th.jpg (http://img167.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel248kr.jpg)

Thats all for tonight :)

The inside , below the doors was made of 2 pieces of 1,5mm karton glued to eachother. No drawing for this operation, just the numbers on the parts. So I'm just showing the finished result. The total thickness on the side is now 4mm and it was a bit hard to bend into the right angle. The floor is going to be placed between the sides.
I might get the floor done before weekend, if I can get some quiet hours at work...

Making of the floor....was more work than I expected.

The drawing
http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/2885/kubel267vt.th.jpg (http://img331.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel267vt.jpg)

And the parts cutted out (most of them)
http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/2033/kubel275qc.th.jpg (http://img331.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel275qc.jpg)

The floor is quite huge with a lot of small "strips" that takes ages to edgepaint.

Amazyah

Building that floor looks almost as "bad" as the tires! :-D

josve
05-06-2006, 10:10 AM
Not so bad as it might look :)

Finished the underside today, and made the "tunnell"

The work on the floor continues.A lot of narrow strips was to be cut out.
I decided to use woodstrips on the floor as it's supposed to be.
here I have cutted out small strips of 1mm balsa wood and are removing the space between the ribs.
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4043/kubel254gj.th.jpg (http://img109.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel254gj.jpg)

I was satisfied with the result.Half floor done....

This seems to be a fun model to build, at least so far :)
Parts are fitting very well, and 1:16 is more a "handy" size...

The floor is finished.

The drawing ov the top of the floor.

http://img288.imageshack.us/img288/8194/kubel296ua.th.jpg (http://img288.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel296ua.jpg)

So I had to make the small paperroundings.each one is made of two small paperstrips, inside and outside

Hi Johnny,
The "Cool-ble" is looking really good!
One thing I have noticed in your builds is that your cut parts are always so clean on the cut, especially the round parts.
Do you use a circle cutter?
I have just ordered one from Olfa and I am hoping it will help me with wheels and to get them cut out and look as good as yours.
Russell

Hi Russel! Thanks for your kind words!

I also use the Olfa circlecutter on completely round parts such as tiresides f.eks
For theese halfround parts on the Kübel I used an Exel knife on the biggest parts and a curved scissor for the smalles parts.

Today I made the second rear fender, glued the rear part to the frame, finished the rear part of the kardan tunnel.
http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/526/kubel483dn.th.jpg (http://img467.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel483dn.jpg)

Also glued the underside of the hood to the frame.
Here is an overview of the progress so far.

I'll do my best :)
And over here we dont release much fish....catch and release isn't very common. So alsmost everything I catch ends up in the freezer as long as it's over 250grams.I freeze the fish "in block" so it keeps fresh for over a year in the freezer if it has to :)

I brought a print of the colour to the colourshop and they scanned it and made an almost perfect match.

The hatches are glued in place and the part 51 is mounted.
There was no drawing of that part, it was kind of self explaining...
The part 51 is some kind of cover over the top of the rear end.

Looks pretty complicated.

Are you going to stain the wood on the floor?

josve
06-12-2006, 08:24 AM
Stev0.
It's not very compicated....all you need is a pair of hands, some glue, something to cut with and a bit patience :)
I'm going to stain the floor with some soil/water solution to simulate dirt.
And apply dryed coffee and some sand I'm going to collect when I'm on holiday in Turkey in 14 days, under the fenders also.I have also planned to get two figures in the 1:16 size.I know tamya has a set of a driver and an officer in desert uniforms.I will try to make a small diorama out of this one too.

Russell.
Thanks for the flowers mate :)
I really appreciate your feedback!!

Johnny is being modest I have this kit in both 1/16 and 1/25 scales. Personally I think it is one of the more complex paper models that I have seen and I also think that it’s the best Modelik kit I have seen.

Great work Johnny.

Hello again! After 14 days inTurkey on vacation I'm now back at work....
Continuing where I left with the front underside.

Finished the bottom construction with the two paperstrips and glued the piece into place together with the back wall"

I think I'll wait with gluing theese parts together until I have finished all the axel and steering details.

The axels rolled with 2mm centerhole.Assembled and painted. The brass axels will be painted and joined together with the steering and wheel arrangement later on.
http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/1330/kubel97zx2.th.jpg (http://img112.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel97zx2.jpg)

Beautiful work Johnny, as usual!

I hope you have a good vacation! I was born in Colorado, home to some of the most gorgeous Rocky Mountain scenery.
I am jealous, a mountain fishing trip, in the bush, is one of the best vacations a man could ask for!
I hope you bring back some great pictures and lots of fish!

First out is making the small sylinder.
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5485/kubel153wq3.th.jpg (http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel153wq3.jpg)
The part is rolled against a 2mm rod to get the right size of the finished part.

The sylinder are done, and the tiny roll to be mounted on the bottom is rolled against a 0,6mm rod.The end plates are also ready to me glued in place

You have got to be kidding me. That piece by itself is more complicated than 90 percent of the models I have done :)

LOL it's not as complicated as it might look Chris! But I have to admit when I stated this build I felt like I had taken water over my head.....but I'm moving slowly and try to read the drawings very carefully....

Construction point2 of the rear axel, suspension and transmission.

The drawing of cp2shows that this is a very simple job.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5589/kubel161yy1.th.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel161yy1.jpg)

It's just 5 parts involved, exept the small strips, and all the main parts are glued to 1mm karton.Strips are glued to 0,2mm karton.
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/8751/kubel162cl4.th.jpg (http://img157.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel162cl4.jpg)

The parts are mounted, and the axel is inserted to see if I got it aligned
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/3939/kubel163zd7.th.jpg (http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel163zd7.jpg)

Overview

next out will be the transmission.....that seems tricky.....

josve

Constructionpoint nr3 is the rear transmission.
The drawing.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/845/kubel167qz9.th.jpg (http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel167qz9.jpg)

The rear part is laminated of 5 parts
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/8162/kubel168ul9.th.jpg (http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel168ul9.jpg)

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/2354/kubel169rh4.th.jpg (http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel169rh4.jpg)

The main parts done
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/2596/kubel170qn6.th.jpg (http://img87.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel170qn6.jpg)

The part is finished
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/48/kubel171bz1.th.jpg (http://img118.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel171bz1.jpg)

All parts are mounted loosely on thers positions just to see how it all fits
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/5005/kubel172dx8.th.jpg (http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel172dx8.jpg) http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2599/kubel173cp3.th.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel173cp3.jpg)

And put on the car to see how it fits there :)
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7510/kubel174yk8.th.jpg (http://img80.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel174yk8.jpg)
It fitted just fine, but I have to wait with the gluing until the engine is in place....and that will be another story :)

Constructionpoint nr4, the wheel connectors.

The drawing shows that this is a straight forward assembly.
http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/3438/kubel175kf4.th.jpg (http://img45.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel175kf4.jpg)

Parts cutted out...still amazed by the number of parts for this build...
http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/978/kubel176tw5.th.jpg (http://img70.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel176tw5.jpg)

The main parts put together.

And I put the wheel on just for fun....
http://img330.imageshack.us/img330/1903/kubel180lv6.th.jpg (http://img330.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel180lv6.jpg)

So now I'm going to put some paint on the parts and glue it all together.

As I didn't have enough small details to work with.....I decided to put nuts and bolts on the wheel since my plans for a diorama involves the change of a broken tire.....and I wanted the bolts to show when the wheel is removed, and the nuts lying on the ground on a dirty/oiled piece of clothing.

So here it goes....
First I tried to put one bolt in
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/4458/kubel181qp4.th.jpg (http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kubel181qp4.jpg)

The nuts

The bolts are 0,8x4mm, and the nuts are 2mm with approx 0,8mm centerhole...

Continued working on the doorpoles and the support between them, made the rear "bumper" made the front "nightlight",made a rear light and some other parts.....

Sweet as always!

How did you hinge that door. It looks great!

I am gonna ask you a favor.... As you prolly know, carl is putting together a bunch of awesome tutorials for us newer folks.

You do a couple things that REALLY stand out to me - ok, well lots of stuff but two things in particular that would make really great tutorials.

First - weathering. If you could put together a photo step by step of how you weather anything that would be awesome.

Second - your tires absolutely rock. Step by step on one of those puppies would rock!

I do know you weather your tires so maybe two in one? heh heh

Of course this is purely a request on my part and I certainly dont want you to feel pressured into it but maybe next time you build one just snap some extra shots :)
Thanks and keep up the great builds!
Chris

Sweet as always!

How did you hinge that door. It looks great!

Thats a secret :)
But I'll try to explain.
On the pic below you will notice two small parts on the doorpole.
The doors are connected by the front hinge, and on the back tehre is a hole that the parts on the doorpoles fit into.So the trick was to only put glue to the tip of the two parts that would fit into the hole :)

First - weathering. If you could put together a photo step by step of how you weather anything that would be awesome.
The model is weathered from the producer, so I'm not responsable for that part :)
I'm also colorblind, so it would have been impossible for me even to think about playing with colors.

I do know you weather your tires so maybe two in one? heh heh

The first post in this thread is a step by step series of the wheels, so that will be easy to find :)
The weathering of the tires are done with chalkdust.I rub some white and brown chalk with grindingpaper, and just apply the dust with a brush....gives a nice effect of dusty/dirty wheels.

I do know you weather your tires so maybe two in one? heh heh

Headlights.

The work on the Kübel is kind of slow with the details and touchup at the end of the build. But I made one headlight yesterday and the other one is ready to be painted and glued on place.

So at last the Kübel is done. This has been a very pleasant build since I first started it back in March and til today. The fit of the parts have been very good, I also think that the printing is very good. The kit contains over 950 parts, and everything have been right.
I'll split this post in two, and take a walkaround on the details first.

First pic shows the front, with the wire (that will be in steel color)
Next is the manual starter rod that hangs on the rear hatch
Third is the rear with the hatches almost closed. It was so much tension in the hinges that the hatches wouldn't stay closed....
http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel259sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel259.jpg) http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel261sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel261.jpg) http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel263sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel263.jpg)

First pic is the instrumentpanel, slightly modified
Next is a the rear licenceplate and the light
Third is the front wheel
http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel265sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel265.jpg) http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel266sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel266.jpg) http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel267sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel267.jpg)

Continues wirh a shot of the roofsystem with the canvastop rolled up.
So comes the fulel cap and the spare tire....and I also notice I have forgotten TO PAINT THE EDGES INSIDE THE WINDOW!!!!
Third pic is the rear suspension and one of the exhaust pots
http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel268sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel268.jpg) http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel269sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel269.jpg) http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel270sm.jpg (http://home.online.no/~johsvenn/artimages/papir/kubel270.jpg)

Johnny,

I love Volkswagen and I love the Kubelwagen. This is on my "most wanted" list for the holidays for sure.

As I watched your build, I could easily identify most, if not all the corresponding parts and pieces that my 1960 sedan still shares with the type 82. Amazing technology then and even now. . .wish an air-cooled vehicle was still made by someone somewhere.

Thank you for a most interesting build. I have permanently bookmarked this thread for reference.

High regards,

cbg

Hello Chris!

Yes the Kübel are going to be a part of a desert diorama which also includes the SdKfz 250 and a Pak40 cannon.Where the Kübel is stranded with a broken tire in front of the Pak and with the Sdkfz250 standing in the sanddunes :)

Thats why I inserted bolts and nuts on the tire, and it will stand on the jack with the tire on the ground with the nuts on an oily clothe and some tools besides. With the bolts showing it will look more real.
