As a South African modeller it is difficult to get products that look exactly like the prototype, so what does one do in my situation? Well, if you can, buy products that can improve on the original, scratchbuild or kitbash, etcetera.
This first (out of three) article is going to show you how to change the chassis on a Lima model (which is horribly wrong) to a more closer to prototype chassis using a Frateschi mechanism. |
Step 1: Glue custom “mountings” on Frateschi chassis at appropriate holes in the body. If Kadee couplers are to be inserted, remove the Frateschi couplers. |
Photo 1: The difference in the original product (Right) and our newly fitted chassis. |
Step 2: Cut off the old supports of the cow-catcher and remount onto new position- the lower support should now be level |
Step 3: Mount Kadee coupler on top of the cow catcher, then add another support underneath the cow catcher support. If Frateschi couplers are still used just attach cow catcher to shaft of coupler. |
Replace the Lima Body and there’s your loco.
In closing, I'd like to say thank you to Louis van den Berg for helping me with this article.
Until next time- keep on Gauging. |
